My horse has just had a very deep abscess dug out of its foot. I am current poulticing and using a shires hoof boot, so I can give her turn out. Long term, If possible I would like to avoid shoeing and putting a pad over it, do any products actually work - I know that you can get a putty and also have had a look at red horse products. Does anyone here have any knowledge?

After Spikes humungous abscess had cleared, I soaked his foot in iodine every day, and packed the hole with iodine soaked cotton wool - which stayed in really well. He healed up beautifully with no re-infection. His sole was completely under-run, and the abscess burst out of his coronet band and through the white line - it was one of the best I've ever seen!

Cotton wool & Stockholm tar always worked for me. Pack the hole then put boot on, we always used to use a syringe to flush the hole with hydrogen peroxide twice a day. Old fashioned but worked a treat!

Have a look at vettec. I had this put on for my horse last week to protect her soles following a puncture wound to her sole.

Thanks everyone, starting with Hoof Stuff and keeping the boot on as I found an unused pot. Going to look at the other options if that doesn't work. Have been reading up on Stockholm Tar, very interesting stuff!!
