Just wondering what you all feed (if anything) to the mare after giving birth?

The book says a bran mash with epsom salts. I don't have bran is it worth getting some just for this feed.

Is epsom salts generally needed, she will be on grass every day till foaling.

Hi
I use a mash from PAVO called slobber mash, that they really love, it is however not easy to get unless you happen to have a dealer in this feed nearby. It is not however essential and neither are the epsom salts. You can just as well give her a scoop of her normal feed with a little more water in it and leave it a few minutes before giving it to her.
Hope this helps

We always just feed a warm bran mash. As we all now know, the nutritional value of bran is absolutely zero - but mares get quite constipated during foaling, and feeding bran gets everything moving again. I also think its a nice thing for a mare to have a nice, warm, easy feed after the extertions of labour!

Hi,
You could just buy a small bag of bran from the supermarket.

That's pretty much what I did for my mare when she last foaled - went to the local health food shop, and bought a small bag ... Otherwise I found if you try equine feed suppliers you have to buy a whole sack!!

I had lots of good ideas of what to feed my mare after foaling, but nature took it's course, her afterbirth fell into her empty feed bowl so she ate it out of the bowl before i could get to it! Grim, but at least she has good table manners to eat it out of the bowl!

Sorry for lowering the tone.
