My youngster has blown an abscess in his heel bulb and through the central sulscus of his frog. He was never overtly lame, so it's come and gone quite quickly. After cleaning his foot last night I could see that there has been quite a deep thrush infection in his frog as well (making me feel really guilty that I hadn't noted it before :o ).

Last night I tubbed his foot with dilute betadine, and I've packed the split in his frog with gauze soaked in betadine, but left it uncovered. I left a note to say that he should be off grass until further notice, so he'll be in a winter pen (hard standing) with hay.

I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should be doing? I'm hoping to try and get hold of a farrier to come tomorrow morning to address the trim, and hopefully tidy up his frog(s); but until I can get a farrier to come... should I switch to RH hoof stuff? wrap the foot? Anything else?

He's not shod, so that's not an issue.

TIA :)

If you are happy it's drained then I would bung some Hoof Stuff in there to keep it clean and treat the thrush. I've found it to be great stuff in situations like this, not sure how I managed before I bought it!

Thanks Scarlett.

yes, I'm happy that it's drained - though will check tonight to make sure. He's going to have an ugly foot for a while, but fortunately it doesn't seem to bother him much.

Well, 4 days later we are still oozing pus out of the drainage point, despite being wrapped and poulticed :(

I'm waiting for some animalintex to be delivered (I've never seen it for sale in France), so I've been using sugardine in a nappy.

The split in the frog has been packed with RH hoof stuff, and is clean and dry, and doesn't bother him at all.

Do you think it would be worth using ichthammol as a drawing agent? I'm a bit leery of using so much betadine.
