After scab removal care?

My horse had the dreaded mud fever (still does). I've managed to remove the best bit of the scabs, day 3 tomorrow to try and remove the rest. I've baby oiled his legs tonight to get the rest off. But after that what do I do? He's confined to his stable until this has healed. I have protocon barrier cream, which I've used previous, but I can't get it off once it''s on... Which is no good as everything crap just sticks to it.

But anyway, once the scabs are off what shall I use? The heels are dry and cracked and sore so I was thinking sudocreme to hydrate the heels and make them not so cracked and dry and then was thinking about Keratex mud shield powder as I've seen good things on the net. Please feel free to advise me on what you would do. He'll be staying in for a while yet as I've spent ages to remove the scabs and don't want to be back at square one by next monday!

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks a lot

Oh one more question! Instead of sudocreme would Gold Label wonder gel do the trick of healing it up? I bought some yesterday to apparently stimulate hair growth In a few baldy patches. Thought it'd be worth an ask.

Brilliant stuff, I use it for most things, it does not get claggy like a cream although it will not work as a barrier it is ideal while you are keeping them in, apply liberally.

I found Sudocrem while does get mucky when they're out in the field is a great barrier - takes some shampooing to get off though when you then want to inspect how things are going underneath but believe it does its job well. Now scabs have gone I'm going for Wonder Gel too as need to get the hair growing back as well.

I believe the scabs are protecting the new skin growth and do not believe in removing the scabs......the treatment I use works well over 6 days with the scabs falling off when the legs become wet naturally (rain or dew)....my treatment being a puffer of black wound powder and flowers of sulphur 50/50, puffed on 2ce a day for 3 days and 1ce a day for 3 days....this also means the horse is not hurt by hands rubbing cream on.....in case anyone hasn't noticed mud fever makes the legs SORE.....

I've always been told to remove the scabs to begin treating the infection. No matter what I will continue to do this as if you yourself had a cut scabbed over but clearly infected you'd remove the scab to treat the infection under neath. He is sore yes, but I bet he'll be grateful in the long run. I just need to know others opinions on the keratex powder as a preventative. Whatever I have done has improved it in a matter of days, he seems a bit happier too, but I don't know if that's due to getting buckets of ready grass and 3 feeds a day.... ;-)

I like the kerratex mud-shield powder as its a dry product and so far so good with my lad he had 6weeks of box rest after horrifc case of mudfever when legs were well enoguht to be booted i used the equi-chaps close contact boots but on drier days ive been rubbing the keratex powder from knee and hock down everyday and the last few remaining scabby patches are continuing to dissapear am 3months in now and still have a few rough areas to clear up (he was terrible) but hes looking good and i havent seen any new damage and he continuing to improve so i can but assume the kerratex is doing a good job i have also ammended his diet to add copper and zinc and micronized linseed to help improve the skin quality
I clean his feet every 3-4days and smoother them in kevin bacon hoof treatment the hard waxy one not the liquid and i paste this on his heels as wells and keeps his feet lovely and heels always smooth and soft great against thrush to all round good product and it lasts forever
as a note the kerratex seems to eb lasting well too £12 a tub mines just over half empty and been using it daily on all 4legs for 3-4 weeks my kevin bacons barely used a 1/4 of the pot and ive had that 4months! so well worth the money
