I have just sold my horse and accepted a deposit but they have now asked for my horse to be vaccinated prior to them picking him up.
He has lapsed with his vaccinations as I didn't compete him and never thought it necessary.
They are paying and arranging the vet and I was fine with this until a friend told me tonight about her horse having a reaction to the vaccine, it became quite poorly for a good few weeks and lost a lot of weight.
Then tonight I was just browsing on here and came upon the vaccine gone wrong thread and now I am really worried.
Apparently it is yard rules that all horses need to be vaccinated before they arrive on the buyers yard.
What do I do????
Am I going to seem really unreasonable if I refuse this, ( I have already said it's fine ) but now doing some research abscesses and reactions are quite common.
Who would be responsible if he became ill, would they still buy him.
I really don't know what to do???
Please advise.

If he was vaccinated before and was fine, I'd discuss with your vet and use the same make vaccine as previously. All of our 6 are vaccinated every year, none of them have any issues apart from one who's allergic to everything, so our vet makes sure he uses one that he least reacts to and he's fine but his glands come up for a few days afterwards.

Chances of a reaction are very small if he has been ok before. Discuss it with the vet and don't have the jab in the neck. The vaccine mentioned in the other thread was the one that made my mare ill. She has been fine since but I will never have it in the neck again. She gets a second antidote injection (which is a mix of bute & something else!).

You are probably just having pre sale jitters :)

You could insist upon full payment beforehand and vaccination at their expense after purchase but before the horse leaves the yard. However this may make your buyer wary for no reason......

If you have had no problems before I wouldnt worry. Speak to your vet. Reactions to any drug can happen and are fortunately rare.

As you have lapsed you will need a secondary, primary then a booster within 120 days of each other, so tell new owner that the first jab you will do but she will have to do the other two else you will be charging her livery.

I'd get it written into the purchase contract, that they are liable for vaccine costs and any related costs incurred from having the vaccine.

As stated, because he's lapsed, it will not just be one injection.

It is very rare horses have a reaction to vaccines. I use a horse vet to do mine, rather than a cat and dog vet, if that makes sense?

If they buy the horse can they keep it on your yard until the vaccination had been done? Then its no risk to you. If you wanted to be helpful you could offer to still do the daily care so they don't have to pay full livery, assuming the horse isn't near where they live.

I would just get him jabbed. The likelihood of anything going wrong is quite slim, and from a buyers point of view, I would also ask for this to be done.
