My mare is having her teeth looked at today, im at work but the YO is there and having her horses teeth done too.
My mare had had her wolf teeth out (just before i bought her last yr) so will she need a few days off before i ride her again?

Im a new horse owner.

She's been shaking her head a lot when i have contact so i want her teeth checked as she isn't that keen on having her bridle on either, she clamps her teeth shut, i hope she's not in pain. She's fine once we're out hacking, the head shaking is in the school.

Providing no serious work is done to her teeth she should be fine to ride. Who are you having to do them? I'll only ever have a fully qualified EDT now after a bad experience with someone who said she was qualfied and it turned out she didnt know what she was doing. Don't be worried about getting a second opinion if you feel after a few days that it's made no difference.

after i have my horses teeth done, if it is just routine rasping i give them the day off(my dentist says that its not nessesary to give them the day off) if they have anything done then i will give them a few days off or ask the dentist how long to give them off.

If your horse has only had its teeth rasped then there is no reason to give the horse the day off. If however its been sedated & had something more serious done, tooth pulled etc then give it a day off to recover, possibly longer but be guided by the EDT /Vet

D is due his teeth done but YO had her mares teeth done recently and she was riding her in the arena about 2 hours after (she only had routine rasping mind!)

When D does have his teeth done he will get time off according to how much work he has to have (I'm dreading it because I rekon it's gonna be a fair amount, poor boy!) If he only has rasping done I may well ride him the same day (depends also what day he has it done)....but if he has more done he'll prob get AT LEAST that day off, if not longer!

My horse had really bad teeth when I bought him - the dentist could only do so much as the teeth were so bad and too much rasping can get to the soft pulp and cause serious damage. he had to be sedated to do the work. I gave him 4 days off. last week he had the second visit - his teeth were still bad with huge hooks, but a significant improvement on the last time. He had 2 days off, but on riding him it took about another 3 days for him to be totally comfortable. Keep an eye on how he is eating - that will give you a clue on how comfortable he is.

Lol the vet came out to look at Mabel and looked at her teeth whilst she was there and her teeth are really bad (we havent had her lon, 3 months) and she has wolf teeth and stuff. But anyway, she was sedated as there was a lot of work and doesnt like her mouht being touched and still managed to break the gag! Shes coming back on monday to try again, hopefully with moe sucess this time lol
