Sorry but....we have the rug questions, the clipping questions, time to resurrect this one,

Gateways. Mud.

How do you deal with it? Last year one of my mares suffered quite bad hoof problems due to the mud. We would ideally like some of those rubber grid mats, but simply cannot afford them this year. What would anyone advise? Hardcore? straw?carpet?

We laid some patio slabs last winter, but the gateway in question this year has a bit of a slope.

Cheers

i manage by using leccy tape.i fence off the gateway and change the shape and size and where the leccytape handle goes.i seem to manage most of the winter like this quite well.also i have two gates so i use this method on both.one gets bad i use the other.

as always, these jobs should have been tended to in the better weather, perhaps next year.sigh.
the best solution is to remove topsoil and replace with scalpings.

I use leccy fencing like Cahill to keep the horses (well horse now) away from the gate and you can make a number of access points to avoid over use of one area.

My 2nd horse who is a Cushings sufferer and therefore needs to be kept off tooooooooo much grass due to the risk of Laminitis is in a wood chippings paddock...... now this works very well as long as it is topped up periodically with chippings but I dont think it would hold up too well with a number of horses ......

We have a tree surgeon come to our yard. He had a problem getting rid of the chopped up twigs & branches that he got from his jobs so the YO allowed him to drop off & level the chopped up branches on our track up from the paddocks. Some has also been dropped in the gateways.....problem eased & all for free....everyone happy

i reckon you have to get to it before it gets bad and the surface breaks.i had a bad patch by the muck heap last year and ended up dragging the barrow instead of pushing it.

agree with this, infact if you ring your local council you can sometimes get it for free and a big lorry load at a time

I was advised wood chips & wet shavings removed from the stable (that is if you use shavings). Best put down now rather then wait for the ground to start chunning up.

Ive done exactly that this year, started putting it down a month ago, and we still have no mud

The gateway looks really good, and the grass has grwon through the shavings so fingers crossed I will have a mud free winter

Thanks for all your replies. It has been dry here so far so no mud yet, but I want to do something before it starts.
I also forgot to say that this is an open gateway between field and yard where they have 24 hour acces to both, so can't really be fenced off.
We have a tree surgeon just down the road...

Thanks
