Hi there, I expect this has been asked before but I can't find anything.

My little Collie dog is 9 1/2 years old and is starting to show signs of stiffness.

I haven't a clue what is the best stuff on the market anymore.

Are there good foods for senior dogs. I don't want her to get fat though so I wonder if there is a "light" feed?

Or is there a good supplement on the market?

My dear little Tiggypoos is a great dog to have around. She has cost me nothing over the years so I really do not mind giving her the very best now to make sure she bounces for a few more years

they do a doggie cortaflex not used it myself but swear by the horsey one! You can buy complete foods with added glucosamine in as well although if you are happy with what are are feeding her now and her weight is stable on it i would be more inclined to go down the supplement root.

1 raw Green Lipped Mussel every night. Works brilliantly on my 13 year old collie. I did a lot of research and this was the one which kept coming up over and over again and I have to say the mussels are great.....and the best bit - no chemicals or drugs.

Synoquin. Fantastic stuff a nutraceutical and not a drug. Keep her moderately active, weight down, a nice comfy bed and you could investigate the prescription J/D diet by Hils but personally the nutraceutical does the same job. Acupuncture or Cartrophen injections maybe worth discussing with your Vet.

Hello. As you know that i've had a few problems with Spotty and now he is feeling back to normal again the vet has put him on Metacam it's an anti inflamtry but is non steroid.Well what can i say we think that we will have to get some downers for spot as he never stops now.

Yes, I did wonder whether the Dog Cortaflex was still the norm.

A friend has recommended the Vet Vits version. So I may well give that one a go as it is easy to source.

Sounds fabulous Tia. I certainly love the idea of no chemicals or drugs (Bit of a hippy you see

)
Now, where on earth would I source these Mussels?
I will google it but you may well have a good source.

Yes, Mum's old Dog was on Metacam years a go.
Isn't that more for proper stiffness? Hers is ever so slight at the moment.
I will keep that in mind as I had forgotten about the stuff

Waitrose and Tesco sell them frozen in boxes, you just ask for a 1kg box of NZ Green Lipped Mussels - they are fine frozen so you just have to thaw them out and then feed them raw. You can't cook them otherwise they lose their properties.

Pedigree were the first company, if I recall, to do this study and find out the good properties in Green Lipped Mussels and I believe they put extracts from them in their senior feed.

Hills diet also do a senior light diet for the older dog that has a tendency to put on weight. This has all that is essential for the aging dog including some level of glucosamine i believe. The synoquin is also fantastic stuff, you can get it from your vet but it is only a supplement contains glucosamines and chondroitin works really well in the early stages of arthritis. When your dog becomes more arthritic then definately recommend the metacam. It is really safe stuff has very little side affects and can be used quite safely long term.We call it the magic medicine!
