agitated mare

i have a lovely little mare who is 4 yrs old, and i have had her for just over a month. she has been coming in during the day to stay out of the heat and away from flies and has been quite settled and happy about this.....until saturday when she was thrashing about in her stable, rearing up and trying to get over the door!!! she ended up a right sweaty and shivering wreck. i do not have any idea what could have set this off, but she has done the same thing today when she had to stay in for the vet (jab) nothing appears to have set this behaviour off and she is such a quiet and sweet pony, but i am at a loss as to what to do???? if any one has had the same thing happen - would love to know what to do. i have never owned a mare before and didnt know if this sort of thing happens when they are in season??

My mare did similar things when she had to come in during the winter. She would rub her sides against the walls of the stable and then lash out behind. I think her stable rub was iritating her somewhere because when I left her turnout rug on she was ok. I have since put her on "No more moods". She may be just uncomfortable if she is in season and blames the stable.

Is she in season? If so I would imagine this would be the problem. Is she in with other horses or can she see other horses? Is her field mate still out while she's in? Some mares just get stressy when they're in season and it's that time of year, one of the TB's on our yard is in season at the moment and she's terribly stressed when she in but then when you put her out she stands at the gate and rears and gets silly - unfortunately you can't always win.

I would say if you wanted to go down the supplement route then NAF Oestress is a good one to try.

thanks for the replies - i really dont know if she is in season, not sure wot to look for to be honest as never had a mare before, she doesnt seem any different behind and she hasnt been squirting. she isnt in on her own, and could see one of her field mates in the block. i do have some "relax me" supp form my last horse that might help until i get a special one for mares, i will try the one suggested thanks. she is fine out in the field and is happy to graze on her own. how long does a season last??
