Agreed to a full loan - and now i feel physically ill !

I would also put on agreement that tack and in particular the bit, is not to be changed without prior discussion and agreement with you. Also, if you want to make sure pony is being kept schooled to how you like, a clause stipulating you or a chosen rider can ride him a set amount of times. I have had a small issue when putting pony out on loan where the loaner would not allow us ride our own horse! Nothing in the agreement to say we could, based on the BHS one, so as everything else was good, we had to go with it, but we now put a riding clause in(and saying we have our own third party insurance so any claim would not be on the loaner).

Again a fab point - i would want the mutually known RI to work him for the next few months once a week - as this is a welshie and he will take the mick if he can - again all of this is above board and I have told the loaners - and bless them they are knowledgeable enough to know that ponies will take the mick if they can - so again that was quite reassuring :)

There is NO WAY I would allow anyone to take a copy of my passport!!

I agree with the other points though. Get references, ask around and visit on a regular basis, I'm sure you will end up with a good loaner, not all are horror stories!

I did mean human!

Its fairly standard KYC documentation these days. If not passport I would want some other photographic evidence that you are who you say you are.

If someone was not prepared to provide this type of information I would not be loaning them my horse. They could be anyone!

I know loaning can work wonders. We loaned a horse from our farrier for 6 months to teach my husband to ride. The horse had been out of work, but in the 6 months he fittened up and looked wonderful, despite being the wrong side of 20! The next loaner did not seem to do as well with him, so the farrier took him back. Simples :-)

On the other foot my last eventer had a low grade but recurring ligament problem, and I sold him for £1 to a home 100 miles away. I had known the person slightly for some time, but it was indeed a thing of trust to let him go this far. The agreement was that the horse would do hacking and dressage, and it has been a huge success. There have been some ongoing problems, but the new owner has invested time and money in treatment and the horse is now successful elementary and is on the point of registering BD.

I fail to see how it is somehow better for me, as an eventer, to be unhappy with a beautiful horse that just cannot do what I want to do. Not when there is another home out there where the horse has spent 3 years being treated like a God, and is fulfilling the new owner's dreams.

If you trust these people, I would look forward to photos, news, videos, facebook updates. I love to hear from my old boy, and how happy they are making each other.

I have almost commented on the Buddygate thread on just this point, that a few unscrupulous people spoil the trust of others to the point that a whole lot more horses will be disadvantaged. Although I agree that "broken" horses are best PTS in a dignified fashion there is a huge spectrum of horses with lots to give new homes, if they are carefully matched. And providing there is a person at the end who is prepared to make that brave decision, as this is something we discussed before the £1 ever exchanged hands.

Is the horse Freezemarked and have you let the FM company know that he's going on loan and that the ownership details must not be changed?

Have you let the Passport Issuing Office know that he's going on loan and that the ownership details must not be changed?

Have you got a contract where it specifically states that the horse is on loan only and cannot be sold?

Have you kept the original bill of sale, to prove that you own the horse?

Is the yard he's moving to close enough for you to visit?

Has the potential loaner given you references?

Very good advice.

The loaner was recomended by word of mouth from a friend of the family. The farm - they own it - is 6 miles from home and sort of on the way to where i keep mine - i have been told i can visit anytime but have said as a minimum I want to visit him at least once a month when i know he is settled. The vets know the family and have vouched for them, the farrier is the same one we use, my riding instructor knows the family and has vouched for them too and the pony by the way - so not sure what more i can do ?

Not sure anyone could do more GW.

Don't panic. Loan owners are not ogres! Two of mine came on PL. One was given to me some 7 years later. Both will stay with me to their end or mine.

I had my first horse on loan for 2 years before I bought her, aged 21. Had her until she passed on aged 29. Wonderful schoolmistress to whom I will always owe so much. Some loaners are genuine & adore their charges.

You seem to have the perfect loan home GW. Pony will be at their HOME - no idea why some are suggesting you take a copy of their passport to verify who they are when they have pony at THEIR home and you have so many personal recommendations.

They sound like a lovely family and the majority of loan homes are fab and successful.

Because this was not mentioned in the first post - it was later on this was mentioned! After the first responses were given

I honestly do not know what to do now, I really thought I have checked, double checked and triple checked - and reading the links to the buddygate I just an worried to bits and starting to doubt if i want to allow a ful loan off my yard.

This was the information given in the first post

I haven't read all the replies but I would take comfort that you know where he is going and you know people who are vouching for these people. You can put in a clause to say he I'd never to be moved from the farm and any required medical care is referred to you.
I recently loaned my little pony out but only because I knew the family and all is fine .

If you really have doubts that cant be overcome then somply don't do it.

Until i read the buddygate threads i was more than happy with what i had arranged..... !

There are too many incidences where loaning has gone terribly wrong but it can work as long as you have people in common and a contract which you do. People you know have vouched for the family and I'm sure they wouldn't recommend if they weren't honourable . Circumstances do change though and if your contract is totally water tight you can't go too far wrong unless the people are crooks which doesn't seem the case here .Most loaning goes wrong when the owner is so desperate to get the horse gone common sense is left at the door .Personally I would never lend to strangers but I don't need to in that my pony will always have a home here if it doesn't work with his loaner whom I have known for ages.

If you really won't sleep at night because of the worry then don't do it. Peace of mind is valuable.
