So am wondering on a friends behalf really. She has a saddle which is much too narrow for her Haffy. Was idly googling on her behalf and had a look at AH super cob saddles - but they seem to have a dovetail/upswept back - and that would bounce on her flat back. So whilst they would probably be OK width wise (adjustable) - not so much behind. I have the same thing with my very elderly H&S saddle - I had it altered to fit my appy but it is too upswept at the back to fit my new lad - happily the semi flex sits really well behind and I can have it adjusted to fit him. She is quite a large lady and haffies are quite short backed - the saddle I saw on Facebook - barely used - an AH cob one - was an 18 inch seat on a 17/17.5 inch panel - is that why it is upswept? Can anyone suggest a WH saddle with no great gussets in the back panel that would be xxw plus? I think for rider an 18 inch would be great but I am not sure the haffy would take an 18 inch panel.

The AH saddles range have a variety of "fits" to their saddles so it would be worth getting sbloom out to do a fitting.

I have seen her do a fitting for a client at my yard; she took a great deal of time and trouble getting a correct fit.

If you ARE looking at these sorts of saddles i.e. "cob" and/or "native pony" then (word of warning) bear in mind that there IS another company out there who fly under the banner of being able to provide these kind of saddles.

If you care to PM me I would be happy to provide more information as I had a bad experience with this (other) company.

The saddle that I DID find fitted my old boy (no longer with me) was a Lovatt & Ricketts saddle - very old - which I picked up at a horsey car boot for less than £100! After correct fitting, it was fine on him - he was wide, flat-backed and low-withered (nightmare to fit!). I tried Wintec Wide but it rolled around like a ship at sea and was the most insecure thing I've ever sat on.

As said above they have all sorts of fits, I had a Phoenix GPJ and it wasn’t upswept. Was a lovely saddle and I was sad when my pony changed shape and it was no longer suitable.
Sbloom on here is lovely and very helpful. Depending on where you are she may not cover your area, but there are several AH fitters covering the country. Take a look at their web site for an idea of their types of Saddles and their fitter areas.

Thank you all - she doesn't have a huge budget and therefore wouldn't be buying new - and therefore I am guessing the company fitters would be retiscent to come out unless selling a new saddle. But thank you anyway and thanks for the suggestions.

I have a GP I bought new, and a dressage saddle I bought second hand. The AH fitter is happy to fit both, so don't assume they wouldn't be interested. But second hand saddles don't come up very often and they get snapped up quickly.

Could you please PM me, I'm saddle shopping at the moment for my flat backed no wither cob and would like to know who to avoid with my hard earned cash

My yard owner had a new AH saddle fitted for her daughters pony - tbh the saddle didn't fit at all well and the after care was not great - and the fitter couldn't get the fit right -and then wouldn't come back again - another saddle fitter had to step in to make the saddle semi fit - in my opinion it still isn't great, so think the saddle is not right for the pony really and it is only thanks to a non AH fitter that it any where near fits so am a little bit reticsent to have my friend buy a new AH saddle on this basis. It was more an open query as to whether people had good experiences on flat backed haffies rather than anything else. But thank you for all your help.

Have a fabulous AH saddle for my flat backed boy fitted by S Bloom, couldn’t have had better service and the saddle fits him beautifully.

Stef took ages to make sure the fit was exactly right. I have had a lot of people comment on what a lovely saddle it is.

I've heard more than one similar story as well which put me off completely from ever buying a new one. My fitter, who is nothing to do with AH saddles does like the supercob for flat backed, no wither cobby types and they do sell well second hand so I wouldnt be put off buying one second hand if you have a decent fitter

That is fab and you can only ever speak as you find in my opinion. Finding a saddle that fits your horse is just great - and a huge relief I know!

Thanks Leo Walker - that is encouraging for friend and I will let her know that.
