my horses' vaccinations expired on 4th march and I've only just realised (actually, i thought that they expired in april and i have not been sent a reminder so i wasn't worrying) will i have to start the whole course again/what should I do? HELP
 
Yeah there is a period where your horse is still protected, but for whatever reason if you run over the exact yearly date you cannot compete

your horsey will be fine and you'll be safe with just a booster x
 
i can cope with the not competeing...one's not broken yet! I will phone them first thing tomorrow and sort something out...I don't believe it...I'm always early!
 
If you plan on competing any of the horses (whether they are broken or not) then if there is any gap in their vaccination history then they may still be turned back.

Some venues are REALLY hot on vaccinations, so if you have plans for your horses then I would start the course again.

If any of the horses will ever compete at BRC shows, they would have to restart the 'flu vaccination programme, similarly if they will ever do something like Pony Club camp or any other event held at a racecourse. To be vaccinated 'in accordance with Jockey Club regulations', as BRC and racecourses insist, there is zero tolerance, and even just one day out means a restart. The first two have to be done not less than 21 and not more than 92 days apart, the third (also called the first booster) not less than 150 and not more than 215 days after the second of the primary course, then boosters annually at intervals of not more than 365 days. You may as well get it right now, it will only have to be done at some point in the future!
 
Could you save the callout charge by taking them to the vet's practice? My vet is happy to jab them in the trailer, another vet we used to use had stables at the practice and we'd unload into there to be jabbed. Worth asking.
 
OK, so i'll need three call out and six injections in all for the two to be fully vaccinated again...so that's about £330? Ouch, I can't believe I've missed it!
 
Just started a new course on one of mine and have the bill right here in front of me.....

Call out= £15
Flu/tet = £18
plus Vat

That was just for the very first one, she had her second the other day. Not too expensive.

If you are definitely never going to compete I would just go with the Tet personally.
 
Yes, but it's spread out over a few months...

Believe it or not, when I looked after teams, someone in our Riding Club missed her dates not one year, not two years, but three years running, and had to restart each time in order to get the first two jabs correct in time to do Area qualifiers...
 
i just need to bit the bullet and get on with it...i'm just so cross with myself. Also, as you've pointed out, it is over a months. I didn't receive a reminder from my vet...aren't these done anymore? It gets better...the dog was vaccinated at the same time as the horses...so you can guess what else might need another course...does this work in the same way?
 
There is some leeway with dogs, I've gone about three months over without restarting - at least, there is with pet dogs, I don't know about show venues if you're into showing them.

I think you have to pay for reminder cards, or some vets now offer a service where they text you when it's due - fine until you change your mobile number... I put it on the calendar in red, also on Outlook on the computer.
 
the dog's not a show dog and will never go to a competition...i will phone the vets about her tomorrow. I will also phone the vets about the horses and restart their course.
