I have a friend on FB, she has a puppy, a nice enough non-descript little mutt. Her latest FB update - **** is so happy **** has agreed to let **** have puppies next year... :(
first comment - you will regret it, they make so much mess and are so hard work...
Her reply - we'll be fine, ****'s dog just had some, plus the vet said its best to let them have a litter first...

A) arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!
B) seriously, do vets still say this??
C) how can I comment without losing my rag, keeping in mind I can't remember the last time I actually saw this girl!?

A) I concur
B) I have heard so much tosh from people I thought knew better over the past few months, I don't know what to think.
'Oh, if she has a phantom, put her in whelp next season, it will flush her out' - or you could spay her.....
'It's unfair to let a bitch not have a litter' - WHAAAATTTTTTTTT!!!!!
C) Keep calm, carry on :p

:rolleyes:remind her the cost of c-section, tell her your friend thought the same till the bitch struggled to whelp and ended up with £900 worth a vet fees, this of course was someone I knew:rolleyes: but you can know them too if you like;)

Tell her remember to offer homes for them and dont burden the rescues when the homes dont work out in a year or 2 or 3 years time.

Pishes you off no end, but what can you do, ignorance is bliss:rolleyes:

Edited to say and stumped as to the vet that gives this advice:confused: I think its a bollox excuse made up for the effect.

I can believe it, apparently a vet has told some owners of a puppy at Training that they will not castrate until he is at least 12 months to let him develop!!!!! He is already big and is becoming more brattish each week, he cocked his leg in the hall recently and is clearly taking control of his novice humans!!!!

I have composed a reply several times, but deleted it everytime, I know she won't listen to me and then I'd have to hunt her down and maime her a bit

Tell her someone else you knew was reported to the tax man and had her benefits stopped, she may not be on benefits, but most BSB's are, so worth a try:rolleyes:

Those were my thoughts too! Her cat had a litter not long ago too.
Makes me so angry and I'm not the one picking up the pieces, your blood pressue must be horrific!

Oh, and remember that little Cocker X Poodle I clipped, that the owners were looking to rehome?? They paid £950 for it  And they aren't rehoming it, they're selling it, god knows how much they'll be asking for that - It's a pedigree Cockerpoo don'tcha know! I'd have been tempted to have to poor little sod otherwise!

Oh god, it gets worse. Next year means literally next year, as in a few months, not as in a years time  Pup isn't very old at all - 5 months max....
She's deleted her original status which had a few negative comments on and made a new one... What's the point in me even trying :( Poor puppy :(

I'll copy something from FB someone posted last week:

A good breeder takes back their dogs when they are no longer wanted, a
good breeder has repeat customers, a good breeder puts all the earnings
they make back into their dogs, a good breeder treats their dog as a
family member.

Will your friend?

ETA - ask her if she would let her seven year old daughter get pregnant :p

Nope, she is one of the 'oh my puppy is so cute and sweet, wouldn't it be nice to make a million of her?? Oh that boy puppy is also really cute, imagine if they had babies??' brigade.

I would like to point out, I use the term 'friend' in it's loosest sense.

Jeez...I can't remember who said it on here first, and maybe I am a freakish freak of nature, but...all puppies are cute. Every, single, one of them. I have never seen an ugly puppy. It's what happens when they grow up that counts.

But I can't be doing with them :o I like horrible, challenging teenagers who need whipped into shape! (And I know you do too :p)

Nondescript mutt as in not a breed? I just don't get why people breed from their mutts: it's hard enough finding good homes for pure breds. Poor puppy.:( Mine are being cut asap.

I think your idea of maiming her is probably best kirsty.:p Its so frustrating isn't it, all you can do is keep pointing out the negatives, and hope eventually she sees sense, but wouldn't hold your breath.

Hey. I'm a mutt owner!

To the OP - I think the only way to get your point across without being too confrontational is to link a few of the local dog pounds to your FB profile, with a few of the dogs highlighted for euthanasia. Try and pick ones similar to her dog. Don't make a point of it being about her - just put an appeal out generally and others will resond with sorrow.

She may be too dim to get it - but it's worth a try......

But you're not having a litter from him or her because it would be cute :p

It's not just mutts - I can look at both my dogs, now they are mature, and say, 'you guys are great, but neither of you are good enough to procreate, physically or personality-wise' despite all those great dogs behind them, and that's before you take into account health tests. Wish some other people could be so cold and clinical :p
If I want a dog like them in future, there are plenty of lines to choose from by other people who can and do, do it much better than I could.

These people are idiots and there are too many people that think this way.

A woman I used to work with got a white GSD bitch and posted pics of her on FB. A male friend of hers commented saying "she looks cool, hurry up and get big, my dog needs a shag - money money money! lol" I had to step away from the keyboard.

Exactly. Nowt wrong with mutts but there are lots in pounds.

I would never have bred from my original two: Jake was screwed re his back legs and Brig is mental and has arthritis on a front paw. He's beautiful (can't resist a pic) but no way would I breed from him, far too silly.

Ditto Mollichop, the amount of people who think this way is amazing, it seems to be the default that you breed your dog.

I meet up with another husky owner twice a week and twice now other dog walkers have come up to us, exchanged pleasantries and then said something like 'ooh, I bet you can't wait for her to come into season, the puppies will be lovely.' They seem very surprised and/or disappointed when we tell them that both dogs are neutered!

My own mother is the same, apparently I should have waited to get Dax spayed as she is so lovely and would have had lovely puppies - sure, waiting another year would have made her an inch shorter and caused her KC papers to magically appear. :p

She and her boyfriend will have to stick to friendly (and blurry) kisses...

(Hiding behind sofa) I think dog puppy`s should be left entire until a year old..and bitches till three months after their first season. That is based on all the five year old leaky bitches I have seen on propalin, and all those permanent hair brained dogs around.

I have an early neutered dog here (one of my adopted welfares) now although we obviously love him ,he is a dopey non-male in character with rather greyhoundy legs. Not quite what a male bullie should look like. His body shape and muscle mass are ,and always have been ,frankly slobby and shapeless.Sorry Sonny!

As for mutt breeding, well you mostly know my views..same as anyone involved in Welfare/Rescue.Leave it to the proper breeders who do all the health checks ,pick their new owners carefully, and take back any misfits.

HOWEVER!! Today at the vets,in the hospital unit, was a little black thing;it had big prick ears,a semi chihuahua head and body..BUT it`s coat was curly and black..undoubtedly an errant patterdale had had a ..erm..paw in there somewhere. Boy was it cute!

Oh Gawd, but I was going to get mine neutered at 6 months (testosterone closing growth plate early blah blah theory cos I want them to grow to their full potential) as a 'responsible' owner and to avoid issues with other dogs. If I get them done early, is it going to affect their ultimate shape? Their little bits are already down.

Sorry to say ,yes it will.I can spot neutered boys a mile off,all the more if it was done too early. That is the reason,or one of them, that cattle are "done"..they then use calories to grow outsize, the more the better for meat production!Issues with other dogs are down to socialization and training in my opinion;we neutered cats to stop the fighting and spraying, but we control our dogs far more than the half wild cats we keep. However ,if you want an oversize dog..then go ahead. Good owners contain their dogs,so multitudes of mongrel pups don`t happen as an everyday thing now.In a way ,being as my first dog was a super tough mutt,it seems a shame that today`s mutt is a highly priced "designer" mongrel.Nature was`nt bad at producing excellent tough family dogs. However,we are a far more crowded island than in the fifties, and with all this daft anti dog stuff perhaps it is for the best.Still remember a little mob of us kids going off all day in the countryside with our motley crew of pet dogs though! :D

Otto isn't out-sized though, he is bang on the breed standard for height, he is just a big, butch dog. Given that he has always been a big, butch dog (he had a huge chest as a scrawny pup) I don't think he has grown bigger than he would had he not been castrated. The main reason he makes other Springers look puny, is 'cos people seem determined to breed tiny, neurotic Springers!!! :D

Just to say, I'm not against entire dogs at all, all of my Parent's dogs have been entire - 6 entire boys living under one roof at one point! However, Otto was a bit of a special case a) he was a loon and we hoped it might calm him down, b) he came with aggression issues and we hoped it might help and c) the thought of a litter of mini Ottos was absolutely terrifying and if they had taken after him in anyway they would have ended up dead or filling up a rescue centres in a matter of months!!

I too agree with this. I was discussing this very topic with a friend last week (she does labrador rescue) and she thinks its awful that vets happily neuter so young = pound signs! A dog needs to develop fully before it is neutered.
