I'm not sure how many dog breeders actually frequent this forum but I'll throw it out there anyway. Does anyone on here do their own AI breeding of their bitches? I'm considering doing it myself next year and would be interested in your feedback if you've done it. I've inseminated my mares myself but horses are a different kettle of fish and probably much easier than dogs.

The site has to have fathered a litter naturally and be deceased for KC to register the offspring. The only exception are Irish wolfhound and using imported sperm.

Is it the technique you're wondering about or the ease of arranging it?
There are dogs in the UK having straws sent to far flung places (IE longer than a drive across Europe, which is what most people in my breed do) but there's a lot of paperwork involved. It's certainly worth it for a numerically small breed or for top sport/work/show breeding that wouldn't be available without a three-day camel ride, or as mentioned, if the dog has passed away.

Oh I don't think those rules apply over here with our Kennel Club as AI dog breeding is very common over here, however I will check that, thanks.

CC I'm looking for specific bloodlines to match my girl's bloodlines and I have found a dog a couple of hours away but there's no way I'd leave my dog with anyone so my plan was to buy the semen and either do it myself or have my vet inseminate her.

I'm only at the choosing point right now (and as a horse breeder I know just how often I change my mind about stallions, let alone stud dogs :rolleyes3:), nothing is set in stone, and I've seen a handful of dogs which I like a lot, but again I wouldn't leave my dog with them as there are vast distances over here and I'd rather just have the semen shipped to me. There is a stud service here who only offer their dogs semen AI and they seem easy to deal with, but their dogs aren't what I'm looking for.

If it's easier where you are then go for it...you could travel with her and stay but I know a few people who've gone a looong way by land and sea and paid for all the accommodation and still come home with an empty female :o

I'm used to having most of my mares bred on the farm and I don't like them going away either; sometimes I have to take them when I'm using frozen semen, but I leave them there as short a time as possible. I'm even worse with my dogs lol and when I've done natural covering the dogs come here. I started thinking about AI earlier this year when I was speaking to a Vizsla breeder who lives in the next village and she was saying it's so much less hassle breeding AI.

I've checked with our KC and AI is allowed so looks like this is an option for me. My vet does it but this Vizsla breeder was telling me she just does it herself and it sounds less complicated than inseminating my mares (which isn't difficult either) but I just didn't know if there were other practicalities that I hadn't considered.
