I know this is a stupid question because predicting the future is impossible but if you used AI how many cycles did it take to acheive pregnancy... does it ever work first time? I mean it must because my vet has figures somewhere around 85% but it is incredibly stressful (and expensive) so I was just looking for some real world experience. (Mare being inseminated tomorrow🤞

Out of n=1 attempts at breeding, my mare took first time. It was twins, but one was successfully pinched out.

I took her to my equine vets who do AI packages and they kept her there for a few weeks. I couriered the chilled semen over from Twemlows. The foal is now 12yo.

Friend had had, I think, 5 or 6 mares AI'd and all caught first time except 1, if remember correctly.

ETA I can put you in touch if you need.

Good luck!

Nice young, fertile mare and stallion producing good swimmers using chilled semen, good knowledgeable vet who is scanning often enough….. very good chance of it working first time!

As soon as you start changing that equation though, you will get failures. The good vet is the most crucial part.

I'm using Roger at ashbrook who everyone seems to recommend including other vets, 3 year old very healthy mare so we have to hope the swimmers are good (older stallion so this might be a negative variable)

most healthy mares get pregnant first time once you get the timing correct. mares only really have problems when they have had a lot of foals and they are older. Most of the time mares that have problems have conformation issues in that area .

Mine that have gone on to have successful pregnancies have taken first time. The only time we have had an issue was with my old girl, and a mare i had on breeding loan. We tried more times than i care to remember and neither got in foal. Never did get to the bottom of Asha ( 2 successful pregnancies, and then never caught again), but the mare on breeding loan had developed an issue and had started pooling urine.
Aria was covered last week, and all went to plan ( in theory) will find out next Friday.
Good luck hope all goes well

Daisy 1st time both times she been AI'd, used a different stallion each time.
Previous mare 3 times using the same (not as above)stallion with no luck, took on the 1st try with a different stallion, but it didn't stick past 3 months.

We tried twice in 2020 with chilled - massive fluid reactions and a right mess. Had a free return in 2021 and new vet said go raw, deep horn and bingo healthy foal.

Rolling the dice on frozen this year so we will see *crosses fingers*

Well, with one healthy mare, tried twice with chilled, nothing 😐 ended up with the stallion on loan and natural cover did the job 😍
Another slightly older mare (had 3 foals before) I think we've tried twice , once at home, once with her staying at the clinic with frozen but nothing.
All times vet adamant mare was spot on timing wise

Davenports use Ashbrook for all their AI (although you probably know that!)
