As some of you may know, im 'hoping' to put my mare in foal in 2007! There have been several stallions which have taken my fancy so to speak, but are AI only, but my mare is a first timer.
soooo...... is she less likely to conceive by AI, and therefore go for a stallion with a natural service or what?!?

Thanks in advance
Kerry

AI is fine - just make sure you are not trying to figure it out on your own, if it is your first time too. You might still want to send her away to have experienced handlers manage the process.

My mare was a maiden and 18 years old, insemination took first time. However I knew her history right from the word go as she was three days old when I first met her, this helped as I knew she hadn't had any nasty infections etc. Speak to your vet about the options, I was lucky enough that my vet just happened to be an AI specialist.
Mabs was AI'd at home but she was pretty exceptional and didn't kick some mare's do not like the scans etc and need to be in stocks.
Good luck and feel free to PM me if you want any more info.

There are 2 schools of thought here. Some will say that a maiden is more likely to concieve if she is bred naturally and then in later years AI her with no probs. Some will say it doesn't matter a jot, as long as the mare is prepped properly, then she will concieve either way! Though I would say you've more of a chance with fresh or chilled semen on ANY mare compared with frozen, and that is more down to the handling of the frozen semen right before it is used to inseminate, not nec. the mare herself!

my mare was a maiden aged 15 and she had AI with a good stallion and concieved the very first time.the stallion got 100% of his mares in foal that season.
your mare is more likely to concieve first time with a GOOD AI centre than natural service-with AI the semen is checked first so she only gets the good stuff AND a smaller amount so shes less likely to throw up fluid(a problem with older mares esp which makes it less likey they will catch)
some stallions dont chill or freeze well(esp freeze) so this is also a consideration.
and if the vet/centre isnt any good it doesnt matter how active the stallions swimmers are its going to end up costing you alot of money and wasted time.
i was worried how my mare would cope with the AI process as shes very stressy type but she was absoluntly fine and i didnt worry about her one bit being on full livery at the stud.
choose the stud carefully, if you arent sure it maybe best to go to an AI centre rather than the actual stud.

my mare was maiden (12) and done by AI, used a very good stallion and concieved first time. Had no problems however 2 mares at the vets who were done by AI were on their 2nd or 3rd attempt and never caught - have tried again last year and again never managed to catch. I did use fresh though as warned against frozen. Had no problems but I think its a good idea to get someone whos experienced in AI to do it for you.
