I found out someone rode one of my horses without my permission. Said horse has been out of work for 18months and only started coming back into work 3 weeks ago and is only doing short walking hacks. He has had previous back and hock problems so nothing too much and we are slowely increasing the amount of ridden time. The person who rode him boasted that she was in the school on him for 40mins and that when she asked him to canter he bucked and that he was very sweaty after. The person who rode him is fully aware that he has been out of work for so long and that he is only just coming back into work. Next day the horse came out of the stable very stiff i was unaware it was due to being ridden i thought he had been ******ing about in the field.

i was absolutely fuming and bought a lockable box for my bridles and girths and i told her to not go near my horses and butt out of my buissness. She then told me that i needed to grow up and stop being so pathetic, the horse was perfectly capable of that level of work or more and i just wrap them up in cotten wool.

Am i being unreasonable in wanting to wrap a metal pole around her head... and also is it unreasonable to expect that no one rides my horses without my permission :mad:

im so flipping angry! especially as he was so stiff the next day :( i feel so bad for him :(
 
I would tell her you will report her to the police. Taking your property against your will and putting your horse at risk ? In fact, I would be speaking to them today.
 
I would not responsible for my actions, and my reaction would not pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOBODY has any right at all to touch someone elses horses!!!!!! Let alone ride them??!!!!

I would be calling the police, sounding out to the yard owner/manager and in fact moving!!!!!
 
I'm sure your YO has now kicked this person off the yard - but are you being unreasonable? No, I'd be incandescent.
 
oh my god, i was absolutely tear the hair off someone that rode one of my horses without permission!!! why did she think she could?

If someone ever took one of my lads out and people on the yard knew it was without my permission, they would immediately be pulled up by one of the staff or other liveries. It's just so out of order it wouldn't happen. How on earth did she think she could just take him out??
 
The only unreasonable thing is that you've not already wrapped a pole around her head! I hope too she's been kicked off?
 
she isnt being kicked off the yard because "it was obviously a misunderstanding." what utter BS there isnt anything to misunderstand?! i never said oh sure you can ride my horse infact i have never let anyone on this yard on him. i kinda thought it was self explainitory that you dont ride someone elses horse! im going to lock all my tack away while i look at other yards as i dont trust her not to try and ride my stallion just to prove a point. i wouldnt have let her near either of my horses even if they were in full work!

Yep, time to move to a professionally run yard.
 
If I were you, after her reaction when you spoke to her about it, I would be calling the vet out, getting the vet checked over, getting them to write a letter saying how detremental it would have been to ride this horse in the school, and getting legal advice - telling the girl that you were going to do all of the above.

I would also speak to the YO. I would have murdered them if one of my DIYs had done that to another DIY's horse. They have a duty of care too. Its rare that I say that too, but if you are leaving your horse on someone's yard it should be safe, and YO should be chasing anyone who does something like that.

Is like leaving a car in a carpark and their mate using it while you're away!
 
I would be off that yard quicker than the wind, even if my horse had to stay in my back garden for the week. I would be seriously kicking off. YO should grown some balls and deal with it. I would also be spreading the word locally but in a deeply upset way not a she's a bitch way :D

As much as riding someone else's horse is wrong, I do think reporting it to the police is going a touch too far.

"excuse me officer, can you go and arrest that person, they rode my horse without my permission" I'm sure the police would have better things to do.

OP: if YO won't deal with it then you'll have to move the horse.
 
What is it with people!!!! Fuming on your half op. I hope shes been kicked off, and to tell you your pathetic? ? Awful person, I would of gone for blood.
Dont let it lie op it is unacceptable if your yo doesnt listen I would be looking to move.
 
Moving might take a while as i own 2 and one is a stallion and people arent willing to take them on their yards and i cant go too far out from home :( may have to move to a friends yard for a bit while i look i really liked the yard too. we were really starting to get somewhere :(
 
If the YO condoned this (surely the YO knows about the horses history and would understand the inappropriateness of anyone taking him in the school for 40 mins) I'd be moving like a shot - and making all the other liveries aware that this is accepted by the YO.

Wildly unacceptable under any circumstances and I wouldn't trust a YO who didn't agree with this with a rabbit!

i'd then send said vets bill to the numpty who gave herself permission to ride your horse! honestly disgusts me how highly some people think of themselves. i'd be absolutely fuming, it'd probably end up me being kicked off for GBH against the offender hah!

I'd be even more furious about how the YO reacted, extremely unprofessional and would make me wonder what kind of ethos and ethics the yard has. I'd completely scare the bejaysus out of them this once to stop it happening again.

I'd follow the other posters advice about getting the vet out (i'd also pass the vetting fee onto rider), a horse on a rehab programme shouldn't have been worked that long in the school and could have physical problems afterwards and get reports done up. You would be perfectly entitled to get the vet up to see if she damaged him. I'd also roll out any insurance and legal stuff I could access and hit them with that. Absolutely completely unacceptable behaviour, I would be livid and even more livid at the YO reaction - I would move in a heartbeat and badmouth the yard from high heavens!. What if she had damaged the horse seriously, what if she had had an accident with someone elses property or injured someone? I'm fuming here on your behalf!!
 
While locking up your tack is a good idea.... the girl sounds such an idiot if she is inclined to ride other peoples horses she may well just use someone elses tack!!!

I would go to the YO, tell her there was no misunderstanding, you never gave anyone permission to ride your horses and you never will. Just so there is no confusion, noone is to ever ride your horses.... EVER! And make everyone at the yard aware of this too.

I could not stay at a yard where a YO could condone this behaviour.
 
I'd also call a meeting for all liveries and the YO and have everyone set out a charter of rules so everyone knows what is acceptable and not. I'm surprised the other liveries aren't upset as well. I'd be worried my horse was at risk of being used improperly as well if I was them.

What is the general opinion of the person who rode your horse at the yard? Is she regarded in high esteem or do people think shes a fool?

Its just sometimes a person can get a lot of sway/power at a yard and can set a very strong atmosphere. It's amazing then when the person leaves how a yard can change in atmosphere almost overnight!

I've seen people at yard 'normalise' bad behaviour because they are strong personalities and people are afraid to pull them up on it. They always counter by accusing any others as being overdramatic and over reacting.

This is appropriate as is you not needing to give notice to move your horses if the YO is so lax in her duty of care to condone this behaviour.
 
OP that is utterly shocking! No you aren't being unreasonable at all!
I'd be furious with the person who did this and giving them the vets bill and I'd be having strong words with the YO making it crystal clear that it was not a misunderstanding and you expect something to be done about it!
I would be wary of her using other tack on your horses too and so I'd be telling EVERYONE to let you know if she even looks in the general direction of your horses.
And I'd be looking to move asap if the YO continues to be complacent about it.
