Hi Everyone,

Your advise and tips would be greatly appreciated regarding healing a bruised sole. My little mare is barefoot and we recently took part in a sponsored ride and I fear she may have suffered as a result of the hard ground and even an offending stone getting in the way. She is currently lame on her front right, there is no swelling, heat or outward sign of injury but she will visibly limp so I have come to the conclusion with some advice that it is a bruised sole. She has been like this for about a week.

What treatments do you recommend? She is stabled for half the day having been box rested for the first 4 days with little change other than getting stiff on her other legs, seems unbothered by it all but must be uncomfy. Previous experiences that will help are more than welcome.

Just wanna get my girl sorted.

Thanks all so much
Jane

Do you know for sure that it is a bruised sole? Just I would have thought some improvment would be showing after a week. Is it worth getting your farrier out to have a look and try to source the pain? Have you checked for a digital pulse and had a tap with a hoof pick underneath her foot to see if there is an obvious sore spot?
Have you given any bute?

I'd be inclined to think abcess.

If there has been no improvement after a couple of days, she should have a vet's visit.

My elderly barefooter's feet went splat after annual vaccines and he ended up getting an abcess which turned into osteomylitis! He had to have 10 days at the vet's.

Don't delay - get a vet.

With bruised soles I have always tubbed feet in water with ice & epsom salts for a few days.

They have usually got better in a couple of days.

Hi Everyone,

I have felt round her foot but there doesn't seem to be any spot which is painful but I will look again tonight and I am only assuming that it is a bruised sole to be honest having sought advice from the person who trims Fudge's feet. She has had some bute as I moved her recently (3 hour journey) which I know won't have helped. I gave her bute this morning and she will have another tonight so I will know whether this has helped tonight when I see her move.

I will have a good look tonight, will it just be a painful spot that indicates an absess? I am going to sound awful but I want to call the vet only if i have to as I can't afford to pay the bill right now having just gone through a relationship breakdown, a move and I am now waiting for my payday with my new job! Bad timing as always!

Thanks all so much for your advice and help. I hate her being poorly.

Jane
