ailments in possible companion horse

It would depend on how severe the arthritis is.

My answer would be yes it would put me off if -

1. It was on pain medication

2. The horse was lame

3. If it is also very elderly (more to go wrong, vets bills with arthritis getting worse etc)

However that is just me and my opinion!

Would it not be better to look in to getting a loan horse from WHW or another similar organisation in desperate need of rehoming horses at the moment? Just a suggestion :)
(If the horse in question isn't a part of that obviously!!)

Not unless it wasnt paddock sound. Also paddock would want to be fairly flat. Most elderly horses are arthritic - though usually the hindlimbs are worse (hocks).
