Hello

I'm thinking of getting an air jacket and wondered if anyone can recommend a particular one please?
I'm a bit concerned at how easily they can go off, are the cords fairly long etc?
Wanted for daily riding/training etc.
Thanks very much:)

My OH had an air-jacket.
He tried 2 brands and bought the one that felt best.
The lanyard length has to suit the height of the horse you are riding. It needs to be shorter for a pony and you check when purchasing as you may need to buy an extra one.

Ah ok, thank you. Was hoping to get one online but looks like I'll have to wait. Thanks for the info

My daughter tried two different brands at a shop and went for the one that felt the most comfortable (Hit Air). They set it off for her too so she felt what it was like. The shop advised a size bigger than we thought she’d need.

I now have a Hit Air too (hi viz one) and don’t even notice it when riding.

Thanks very much will look into those and see where sells them when things back to normal :) thank you

It is much better to have them set off on you to check they are comfortable and suitable. DD has short torso compared to leg length so the hit air would cause her more harm than it would prevent - but the helite, even with a collar, is fine. You also need to think about whether you would only use it over a BP or without; whether you want the gilet style tec.

Thank you, I'll wait until we are able to go shopping again and try some thanks for your info

I like my hit air jacket. I use it for hacking and schooling and it has gone off a few times! I’ve never felt like it was crushing me and I’ve not felt winded after a fall like when wearing a BP. The worst fall in it was out hacking where due to an incident on the road involving a lorry I fell off onto the road at high speed. My torso and neck didn’t hurt at all due to the protection from the hit air jacket, whereas from my pelvis downwards I was in a lot of pain for several days after.

Thanks very much, that's good to know. Are the cords fairly long? They won't go off unless it's quite a distance from the saddle? Thanks

I have a helite one. You adjust the lanyard to the right length for the size of horse you are riding.
I wear mine everytime I ride my big horse. I have utilised it more times than I care to count. Walked away everytime, even the day I landed on the road VERY hard.
Best money I ever spent.

The lanyard with the hit air is a bungee type thing which has some stretch in it. My horse is about 15h and it’s always inflated properly before I’ve hit the deck. It does have to be quite a way off the saddle before it goes off.

I have a Helite one. It ‘explodes’ outwards whereas others ‘implode’. I’m 5’ & 81/2 stone & it is a super fit, very comfortable & just looks like a gilet. I tried a Point 2 but didn’t like it.

I have a HitAir and I'm 5'7" with a 14.1ish pony - I haven't actually fallen off in it (yet) but one day I tested the lanyard to see how far it stretched and I realised that by the time it snapped at least part of me would be pretty well on the ground anyway. So I contacted the company and they advised me to buy the shorter pony lanyard. For various reasons I'm not using the jacket at the moment, but when I start using it again I will make sure I've got the shorter lanyard. I assume the one it came with is standard, but if you're buying a new jacket it would be worth inquiring. I didn't have a clue about lanyard lengths when I bought mine.

Edited to add, the HitAir is really comfortable, I don't notice I'm wearing it even in the summer, and it fits me well. I have a long back though.

Thanks very much for the info, I have a 16.2 youngster and he can do some acrobatics at times so just wanted to make sure it wouldn't go off too easily unless you actually fall thanks again

it takes 5 1/2 stone of pressure to set the HitAir off, so it won’t go off unless you fall & put enough pressure on the lanyard

The shop insisted on setting one off when my OH bought his. I was too scared to try! But I think the manufactuere=s have rules.
I am now on a sharing yard where one is not allowed to wear air jackets in case they frighten the horses. Seems wierd they dont know how to train the horses? But I dont wear one, just my bp, so pointless to argue.
