Air jackets

Or is there a reason/advice out there saying not to carry a spare canister?

Why wouldn't you be able to, you've got one strapped to your chest while riding an often highly dangerous and usually quite unpredictable animal. One attached to the saddle cloth, for instance, is the least of your problems :D

I carried a spare in a pocket on my saddle cloth. But spare or no, it is better to have the added protection for half a hunt than for none.

Here you go Ester, mine was khaki, this is the original P2 from 2009.

Why, ohh I dunno, not wrapped in a special protective sleeve, fixy twisty thingy might malfunction, there's a D in that day of the week.... In this age of heath and safety nothing would surprise me.
;)

There's no fixy twisty thing on a hit air canister. Don't know about the rest. Protective sleeve, it's only a bit of rucksack type material. I'm very risk averse and I don't see an issue with carrying a sore.

Mine does. I did get a large though (I expect the Medium would have fitted as well but possibly not over the BP) but it fits me nicely as a general gilet and it also stretches over my BP. It has gone off in both instances and has worked fine.

I have a large Helite gilet. I think size wise they come up small as I would need a small ordinary a.j. I have "exploded" wearing the gilet alone and also with the b.p. It has worked well every time but obviously it feels tighter at initial inflation with the b.p.

thanks, I did have a google of khaki but nothing came up :D arguably smarter then!

I'm betting you have ordered the Hi Viz version
:)

Actually I found a website where you can order a hi viz tabard plain for 99p and then customise it. I bought a massive yellow one with big red writing and if the hit air went off if it's not big enough the Velcro will just come undone. Have just ordered some more hi viz though

The technology is from motorbikes and not designed to be used with a body protector, at least with the one I have anyway

The original technology came from motorbikes, but equine air jackets are not the same. They absolutely ARE designed to be used with a body protector underneath! I've conceded that people do wear them without - but even the companies making them state that they should be used over a body protector for ultimate protection

Yes, the technology comes ftom the motorbike race industry.

However, to dispel a big myth as mentioned above by Leo Walker, motorcycle racers DO have body protectors along with inbuilt protection in their full leathers, please do NOT think otherwise.
Auslander is correct that these are designed to be worn with additional body protection in competition for motorbike racing as well as equestrians.

If your seatbelt broke driving home, would you get out and walk?QUOTE]

Not really a similar analogy - she could ride back to the trailer, which would fit your scenario - but she continues to gallop and jump having used the only air canister.

I wouldn't be confused if she no longer jumped, having inflated it, but she does!

She obviously considers that it is better for her to be safer for part of the time that she jumps than it is for none of that time at all. I don't really see the issue? At least she's avoided one set of bruises, as Ester says.

If you fell off ten miles away from home and hit your head but were fine, would you walk the horse home? I wouldn't, I'd ride home and then replace the hat.

Motorbike racing isnt what most people on motorbikes do.

They arent marketed by anyone I can find selling them as needing a body protector underneath either, although a few do sell them with elbow/spine protection in the jackets. Spine protection is very different from a body protector. I've just spent ages looking at the spine protection for motorbikes and was really shocked by how little protection they provide on the whole, although there are exceptions.

The technology came from motorbike racing, this is what I was referring to, and they have body protectors too. Even experienced track day Johnnie and jills will put chest or body protectors on, inside leathers.
The full Knox ones are very good.

The separate air vests for motorcycle riders are not ever used on track as not safe for that activity, only the ones built into good one piece suits.
I would never wear a separate air vest on a bike on toad or track for a multitude of reasons, the main one is that a good set of protective leathers is designed to slide, if there is something over the top, it can easily snag and then cause much more damage by rotating the rider and altering the trajectory.
