Hi, does anyone know if it's ok to wear an air vest (alone without bp) in dressage competitions? Have bought a hit air in black so was wondering if I would be allowed to use it over my black jacket in bd? :-)

Is your air vest one with protection panels fitted? An all-in-one.

If not, i thought you have to wear a body protector underneath anyway.

no this is wrong sorry.

Yes you can wear your airvest at a dressage comp and no you dont need a body protector under it.

The rule about wearing a body protector in conjunction is a BE rule for going XC (& many other XC comps) because there is no guarantee the vest will inflate in certain types of fall where you may not leave the saddle if the horse comes down.

Oh ok. Shop told me its because when it inflates it can cause more damage to your internal organs than the fall itself.

It's a shame when retailers don't know the facts isn't it:rolleyes:

Actually not convinced this is correct either - believe you should wear back protector also because air vest does not protect all areas.

no sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree, that's not why BE have the rules. An airjacket is perfectly acceptable to wear on its own. (if you are happy with airjackets in general but thats a whole other debate;) )

Suzie G thats astonishingly inaccurate!

The basic answer is you need to look at the rule book!

Pony Club rules require that you wear a BP beneath an airjacket becusae they require a minimum Level 3 protection and an air jacket alone (other than the all in one PRS-2) does not provide that.

Both BS and BD allow air jackets alone, or indeed no protection at all.

My understanding is that BE do require a BP under an air jacket and that this was for the same reason as Pony Club does. But we are not BE affilliated so I am open to correction on that.

Unaffilliated shows usually don't have any specifications.

A lot of people have a lot of opinions about why and whether. But what is relevant to the Q origionally asked is are they legal - the answer is "sometimes"!

Another one for the like button.

Thanks so much everyone for replying. Sounds like I am fine at BD to wear it then :)

Hit Air show people wearing it without a bp underneath is some of their advertising so I am sure you can wear it either way (it inflates outwards so I guess that is less potential for internal damage).

I generally wear it over my Body Guard jacket for hacking or my racesafe for jumping anyway but do want to wear it on it's own for dressage/lessons/summer riding.

Thanks again

if you look on the FAQ section on the hitair jacket website it says its fine to wear on its own :)
