I don't like doing it, but I just asserted my boudaries very firmly.
Scenario: former sharer, who I asked to stop because she didn't return tack, disobeyed safety instructions and had no control over her daughter (3) asked to borrow Bruin (36" shetland, 25, totally trustworthy) for DD's birthday party. She is having a difficult time, and plays on it heavily. I said yes provided 2 of my kids (adult, competent) were present and specified a safe, convenient location nearby.
For whatever reason this isn't acceptable to her and she has been suggesting various unsuitable places ever since. Latest is a public venue surrounded by steep banks into fast running water. I said no on safety grounds.
She comes back with 'well perhaps we can just brush him then', totally ignoring my location veto. Then adds that this is a problem because of the boucy castle she's hired, which she hadn't even thought to mention!
I have withdrawn my offer and told her to go to a riding school.
