The Byerley Turk was, I reckon, an Akhal Teke. After all, if you were trying to breed the perfect racing machine wouldn't you cross the Arab (endurance and speed) with the Akhal Teke (endurance and speed)?

Turkoman I'd say, but yes Byerley Turk was probably a similar kettle of fish to the modern day Akhal Teke.

PS. I think they are beautiful too. I fully accept they are weird looking and their conformation (compared to many modern type horses) looks strange, but ...

That is one seriously p*****d off horse! It looked to me that as soon the horse had his front feet on the floor he was trying to attack the "handler". Can't say I blame the horse though
