Akhel-Tekes - anyone own one?

Have you see all the recent posts under Competition Riders - "Are Akhal Tekes any good at eventing" - there are websites etc there to have a look at.

I don't have one nor have had one, but I'd like to

Never had any experiences with one but would love to as i think they're stunning animals. Shall be watching these threads closely as would really like to own one someday should the opportunity present itself

Brilliant, any info you can give would be much appreciated! What is your boy crossed with? I have done a bit of research and think they sound exactly what I want, would want him for eventing & general all rounder - not endurance. From what I have read they have a fantastic jump so hopefully you can confirm that. How do you find their temperament, are they generally sweet natured?

Back in the dark ages when I was a student and studying Russian in Krasnodar (way down south) I was lucky enough to ride a 3yr old Akhal teke colt for afternoon exercise at the local race course.

I was invited back to ride out for the morning exercise, but had to decline due to lack of transport (6am start) hat and boots. Confess I was hatless and wearing trainers for the afternoon session

The horse I rode was a total poppet, but I understand the breed has a reputation for being sharp and quirky. They need a job ie eventing or endurance.

He's bred for endurance - crossed with my new forest x ex-endurance mare.
I can confirm the jump bit! Although he's not bred for it so I haven't jumped him at all (he's 5yo ATM) he used to jump 5 bar gates fairly regularly as a baby - he would have stood about 13hh the first time he pulled this one! Thankfully he's calmed a bit in his old age!
Not sure how much of his physiology/psychology is from his mum, and how much from being an Akhal Teke per se but the noticable things about him so far:
* very intelligent (for a horse) always up for a laugh and sometimes stubborn!
* very 'mouthy' loves to eat/bit/mouth everything - can't leave anything in the stable with him!!
* very sure footed - never had any trouble controlling his legs as per most youngsters, even on his first few hacks - been out on the snow and ice, touch wood, he hasn't struggled at all
* Strong stomach (not from mum) - never had the runs yet!
* (touch wood again) strong legs, only been lame one because of a foot abscess (despite lots of t**tting about)
* Doesn't 'naturally' go in an outline because of the slightly 'upside down' neck but learns very, very quickly so thus far schooling has been a pleasure (we're still at the early stages tho) - also v. supple i.e. bends nicely

I would definitely describe him as a handful, but also a really nice horse to own (very people-friendly like the arab I used to own).

Haven't done enough with him yet to tell you much about muscle/fitness I'm afraid.

Let me know if there's anything else I can tell you!
