Hello

I am moving to Alderley Edge in Cheshire in January (yes i know maybe i am being a bit premature but do like to plan) and have 2 horses, one a young Irish Sports horse and my older retired ID X boy. I've done a little bit of research on yards already and have a few possibles on my short list to visit/enquire about. I was hoping just to gather a little more info/opinions about the following places and maybe if anyone has any ideas of other places no more than a 15 minute drive from Alderley you could suggest i would really be appreciative.
I'm looking for full or part livery (happy to do weekends for both boys but work away in the week sometimes so would prefer full livery then). I would like a good sized arena and all year turn out - even if limited in Winter. We do like to hack too so off road hacking. Most importantly though, i'm really seeking a nice, happy yard where the horses are cared for on an individual basis - i am quite shy and struggle with large, competitive environments. We are moving from a really nice, small yard in the Midlands where we have been for 7 years so it will all be very new to us.
The places i have come across so far in no particular order are:

- Oldhamswood Livery
- Copper Beeches
- Dean Valley Farm
- Lumb Brook

Thank you for your help.......

Don't know much about Copper Beeches. Dean Valley has a farm ride, so would accommodate your off-road hacking. Not sure about Lumb Brook - I *think* there was some talk about them having a farm ride put in for the liveries. I've never been on livery on any of these yards, but I am local to them. I believe the hacking around Oldhamswood is quite good.

From what you describe, I think it sounds like Oldhamswood would suit you. Dean Valley is quite a big, competition orientated yard so might not be your thing. I know some people who keep their ponies at Oldhamswood and they all seem to love it. Hope this helps!

Lumbrook hacking is downright dangerous roads, but it's a very nice tidy little yard with a good arena.

Dean Valley is huge and clique ridden, but it has a great arena, an indoor, a gallops and a farm ride.

If you can find anywhere close to Tatton, you can ride in the deer park. You can take a box or trailer there too. Macclesfield Forest also lovely hacking if you can get there. And Somerford has a fantastic long all weather farm ride, where I'll be on Friday, weather permitting.

Thank you for replying.
Somerford i know of but would be a little too far for stabling. The place does look fantastic though! Hope you enjoy Friday :-)

Do you need to live in Alderley, it's horribly expensive? It doesn't have the highest sales per head of champagne of any village in England for nothing :D

You could live in Macclesfield, much cheaper, more countryside, easy commute, several more livery yards available, including Adlington with access to Midlewood Way and Moat Hall , both with all year turnout.

Sorry having technical issues with my reply SPORTERS!
Love, love, love Dean Valley but i am bias as been hunting with the Drag for years now. The Hagues are dedicated people and know how to manage their land and run a very large yard well. The size of the yard may mean it would not be perfect for you though?
I'm not sure about Oldhamswood or Lumbrook so can't comment.
I have heard many things about Copper Beeches and very little positive. I believe the yard manager has a terrible reputation and there is a very high rate of staff turnover and liveries leaving due to her not getting on with people perhaps as well as she could? I would be very careful there if i am honest.
Have you thought about the Poynton area? Google Nelson Farm. That has a very good reputation, is a medium sized yard and has great hacking off road. I would think it could suit your needs well?
Very best of luck with the move and PM me if you need any more help - i live in Mobberly so local to where you plan to be. (2 miles or so)

Finlow Hill in Adlington does livery I think. From what I've heard it has good facilities.
There is also Gollings between Wilmslow and Macclesfield and that is a bit rough and ready but has indoor and outdoor, and a bit of hacking.
I drive past Copper Beeches every day but don't know anyone there, I thought it was just retirement livery but could be wrong!
ETA - I live in Wilmslow which is nearby, if you want any more help I'm happy to help!

I keep my horses in Alderley and absolutely love it. I am just up the road from Oldhamswood and would definitely recommend that place. Our hacking is fabulous and there is a lovely local supportive horsey community and so much going on. The owner of Oldhamswood is a fabulous chap, very friendly and it really is a great yard where people stay for a long time. There is a livery yard next door with a huge arena to hire too although there is one at Oldhamswood. I know I'm a bit biased as I think the area is great but do come up and have a look...I don't think you'll be disappointed!!

I am stabled on a lovely yard in Ollerton called Ash farm. There is a god outdoor arena, all year turnout and good hacking. The yard is smallish, friendly and a good mix of those who compete and those who don't. I have been on Somerford previously and it is definitely worth the drive, wouldn't take you that long from Alderley but it is a very big yard and the competitiveness depends on which yard you choose.

Now that does sound nice and looking at a map, Ollerton would be ok i think. Does the yard have a website or a FB page i could look at? :-) Can i ask the prices? I have googled the name and think it is the farm that has had improvements to the bridleway is that correct?
I think i am also liking the sound of Oldhamswood and have done a bit of research on there.
However, Copper Beeches is likely to be the handiest as my daughter will be going to the girls school near there hopefully so for school runs it would work out well. They have a basic website but not much in the way of FB. Have you any thoughts on there at all?
Thank you :-)

The yard is run by Ruth Mason, she has a facebook page but I am not sure that the yard has a facebook page as it is usually filled by word of mouth rather than advertising. If your daughter is going to AESG then it is only about 10 mins drive from there. The price depends on the level of assistance you have, we have ours turned out and brought in every day and all rug changes etc done so basically part livery and it is £67 per week this includes one bale of shavings and ad lib hay or haylage.
The bridleway has had some work done on it recently and there is lots of good hacking. There is also the use of stubble fields at certain times of the year too. The yard has a horse walker and horsebox/trailer parking too (free of charge).
I don't know about Copper Beaches as I actually live in Congleton so I only know about Ash Farm in this area. If you are interested still and you PM me then I can give you Ruth's contact details.

There are a couple of owners on my current yard (I'm in Macc now) who have been on Copper Beeches and do not rate the YO at all The woman who runs it has a really bad rep and why most customers leave....
Good luck with the move.

Hi I hope your move went well and have settled your horses and children. I have just seen this post and wanted to help incase you are still looking. I have been at Copperbeeches for over 5 years when my vet referred me there. The yard is very friendly and efficiently ran in fantastic surroundings and as someone who is away with work a lot I completely trust the yard manager and her staff to look after my horse all the time. Your horses would definitely be ok! However it quite quiet and full livery or retirement which some people don't like, so if you are looking for a slightly busier yard then Dean Valley is also excellent and the facilities are exceptional as they have a farm ride, and it may suit your daughter more as there are more children there. Oldamswood offers great hacking, we walk past there with our dogs and the horses always look really happy. There is also one near the airport runway called Holly Bush I think, we looked there and would have gone there if we couldn't get on Copperbeeches, it's not got the same level of turnout however they have got great hacking and a huge indoor school and the lady who ran it was very efficient, I hope you get sorted and message me if you need anymore information

Agree with this too in fact for such a horsey area it can be a real struggle to find anywhere decent. I have heard good things about lumb brook but believe it can be difficult to get a place on there.
