Anyone heard of him? Would you recommend? I've been asked if I want my horses done by him as he's in the area and the lady organising his visit is singing his praises. I can't find any info tho and am wary of using someone I know nothing about.

Where do I look, ie registered bodies, to find out what qualifications he's had and does anyone have any first hand experience of him? PM me if preferred.

Many thanks!

In the UK to legally carry out more than category 1 procedures which are the very basic removal of small enamel points and overgrowths with hand rasps EDT's have to have passed a DEFRA approved exam (either the BEVA or WWAED). Those who have passed the BEVA exam and have current insurance and up to date CPD etc will be members of BAEDT and are listed on their website.

Unfortunately there are people around carrying out procedures they are not legally allowed to do and if anything went wrong your insurance is very likely to be unsympathetic. Many vets are also unhappy to sedate etc for non qualified EDTs. IMO it's a bit like using an unqualified back person - if things go wrong you have no come back. Many people are happy to take the risk and sing the praises of these people but it rather undermines those who have spent a lot of time and effort going down the "correct" route.

As regards this person I have no personal experience but have heard he does some famous show jumper's horses - for me that really doesn't mean a lot but obviously sways other people.

Thanks for this. So what about someone who say trained at the American School of Equine Dentistry? Do they have the same kind of qualifications as someone who has passed the BEVA exam here? I'm asking as someone I have used in the past I noticed isn't on the BAEDT list of members either?!

From what I can see the American School of Equine Dentistry seems to offer a 4 week course. Whilst it may be a good course EDT's doing the BEVA exam would have to have far more experience and training than that as they have to complete a portfolio of 300 cases including 40 advanced cases along with references from vets and qualified EDTs before being able to sit the exam. That doesn't mean that an EDT who trained abroad isn't good and may well have additional training but overseas qualifications are not recognised by DEFRA so they can only legally carry out Cat 1 procedures although many people seem to ignore this and many owners are unaware of the legislation.

I wouldnt use anyone other than Alex Moulder for dentistry.

Everybody that uses him, that i know, is extremely happy with his work.

Having watched him carrying out his work, on several horses, the horses seem far from nervous or discomforted in anyway. :)

Definately a good choice of dentist for your horse. Cant praise him enough!

Hiya, we've used Alex for years. He's quite hard to get hold of but he's worth all the hard work!!! When he comes to our yard he does 10-15 horses. He's very patient with all the horses. Mine can be particularly difficult and with Alex he's so relaxed. He was with us today and did 11 horses. I cannot recommend him enough
