Alfa A cause of Fizziness? Alternatives please!

I've read on a similar forum that Alfa A has caused others to become fizzy, I think this is what's causes my girl to be so spooky!!

Can I have some recommended alternatives please with less fizzy whizzy pony! Lol

I have just taken our 14.2 ginger, spooky mare off hifi lite as it has Alfa A and molasses in. We changed her to fast fibre and she seems a bit calmer but a bit concerned as it has soya meal in it which some horses react to. I'm thinking of trying a bag of dried grass as she just needs something to add her minerals and vitamins to.
 
My mare cannot tolerate Alfalfa in any shape or form, there are lots of mares who cannot cope with it, as it has a large amount of phyto-eostragens in it. I would think it would be worse with TB and Arab mares than others, as they come into season all year round and the added hormones are not necessary :p

I was considering just mollichaff original as its 1/3rd the price and less sugar... Hmm, may give it a whirl!
 
We can't give our cob alfalfa, makes him bonkers. He gets mollichaff calmer and speedibeet. He looks great and he's much more level behaviour wise.

That's interesting I did not know that was the reason. My mare has hi fi lite and often has carrots so might be worth a change. Before that she was on this cheap molassed straw chaff I had left over from feeding another horse antibiotics and she did seem better then despite the sugar overload!

I was looking for good old fashioned hay chaff but maybe graze on would be the next best thing.
 
Alfalfa sends mine bonkers! I've used part alfalfa chaffs in the past & he copes with those just seems to be full alfalfa that upsets him. Bit annoying as he's ulcer prone & it's recommended to feed alfalfa. I'm using graze on this year & really pleased, it's duper cheap, he likes it & holding weight fairly well so far.
 
My daughter's first pony was a raving nutter on alfa A.
We fed unmollassed beet pulp, as flash dried grass hadn't been invented then.
 
Have taken my mare of alfalfa as it was sending her loopy. Have put her onto readigrass instead and she's much better.
 
This is not uncommon, if you want to keep the protein and calcium levels and a good DE, any of the grass chops will make a good alternative, just be aware that the starch levels could be higher.

Those are alfalfa pellets ;) and the chaff is made from alfalfa.


My gelding can't tolerate alfalfa. I use mollichaff Calmer, which is made out of oat straw. It is covered in soya oil and a small amount of molasses, which doesn't seem to both him.

I don't think Mollichaff does contain Alfalfa. My mare went a bit "funny" on Alfalfa (jogging / spooking) and when I looked for an alternative, Mollichaff was ok, I even asked them if it has Alfalfa in it. I now give her Apple Chaff & she was back to normal in a week.
 
Interesting thread as my mare seemed more stressy when I was feeding her alpha a oil but now feed her hi fi molasses free with high fibre nuts as needed her to be level headed again although not seeing a huge improvement yet from it she's been on it for about a month now
