Wanting a bit of advice as seems to have done the trick... But could be my hopeful imagination.

Horse displays ulcer like symptoms, treated with course of gastroguard in January. Want more "energy" in him as he is a laid back character to school.

Bought Alfa a oil to feed as well as sugar beet. And give him a large handful before riding to help with stomach acid splash.

Question: is Alfa a oil good for ulcers? Guessing it is as its high in fibre and oil.
And does it do the job of providing "energy" as not wanting to feed competition mixes or anything cereal based due to ulcer symptoms

Hi, I cannot comment on the question about ulcers but yes, an oil and fibre and oil based diet should provide just as much energy. Many people swear by just using fibre feeds. You may need to check quantities though as for the Alfa A Oil you need to feed quite a bulk to achieve the correct level. As for a full spec of vitamins and minerals you may want to add a supplement or balancer that would ensure your horse gets all he needs.

Just seen that Dengie feeds say on their website for managing horses prone to ulcers:
"Include alfalfa in the ration. Independent research at Texas A&M University has shown alfalfa is a natural buffer to acidity due to its protein and calcium content"

It didn't give mine any more energy, unfortunately - and she was eating 6kg of it everyday.

As long as you keep the NSC levels of all feed excluding hay below 15%, you should be fine.

Yes it is good for ulcers, alfalfa is recommended to be given before exercise to reduce splashing.
It should be a good source of energy as well so ideal to use.

Brill thanks! Tried it at weekend both days and it seems to have really helped!

Seemed much sharper off my leg, and sparky instead of lethargic. Hopefully a combination of his stomach acid not being as bad as usual and energy from the oil too :)

my ulcer boy (competing PSG) gets a big scoop before work and it def helps him, and a client has tried the same thing with her pony with brill results :)

both these are prone to being *piggy* off the leg but are much happier and more forward if they have their daily chaff as it helps stop splash ulcers.

this actually seems to have worked!!!

tried jumping for first time since feeding him alfa oil and he it was like a rocket up his backside! Suddenly developed a cocky / air of arrogance when jumping which i have been wanting for a while with him! He made 1m feel like a canter pole last night and usually have to work really hard to get him forward/sharp off the leg!

Fingers crossed this carries on!
