I have just bought a bag of Alfa A original and was previously using Hi Fi Light. This bag seems very bitty, in that there doesnt seem much chopped hay just Alfalfa dust??? Is this normal?? Ive heard alot of dissapointing replorts recently about dengie products and am considering changing if this bag is anything to go by. Any recommendations on other similar products??

The last bag of Alfa-A I had was fine. But funnily enough I bought a bag of Hi Fi Original the other week which smelt very alfalfa-ry compared to a previous bag. A friend also has her pony on Hi Fi Original so had a look at her bag to compare and it was mostly straw!!

They don't seem to be doing very well at keeping the bags consistent.

My recent bag of Dengie Hi fi was very "dusty and dry" and I also seem to be going through it a lot quicker than normal - put it down to a one off. However I am looking after a friend's horse for a few weeks, opened her bag of Dengie this evening and hey presto the same. :(

I am too thinking of perhaps swapping if my next bag is the same but not sure what to use instead - any ideas would be appreciated...

Simple System do a really nice Alfalfa chaff - I think it's called Greengold. I used to get it years ago before SS, I think it came from Scotland, but may be wrong.

alfalfa isnt a grass, its a legume, rather like clover to look at. it is only the stalk that is hay-like, the leaves turn powdery. hi-fi is a grass and straw mix [ traditional chaff is/q was a mix of hay and oat straw mixed . its other name is "chop". alfalfa has more calcium and proteins in it than hay or oat straw and so is a partial cereal replacer, often fed to competition horses to give more nutrieint content to the feed and add fibre too.

TopSpec TopChop Lite is what i changed to after varying bags of degenerating HiFi Lite, Dengie have coated a lot of their chaffs in Vanilla now for some bizarre reason. The TopChop is great, not dusty and very golden.

How much approx do you pay for the topchop lite, I always think of TopSpec as being expensive for some reason  .... both my horses are now leaving their Dengie Hifi, so I am not the only one that thinks my new bag is rubbish ...

i had the same - complained - they sent a sample bag for me to fill - i sent it back said nothing wrong just bitty for time of yr gave me a voucher for free bag!

Funny you should mention this. We use Alfa A Lite for our laminitics. Normally very nice, but the last bag was really powdery and dusty. It made me sneeze handling it, and my mare is RAO so I was a bit anxious, and wetted it well. Perhaps last summer's drought was the problem? Normally I find all their products excellent. Perhaps someone from Dengie will enlighten us...
