Alfalfa essential Oil

Hi

My horse isnt allowed to eat chaff anymore. However I like feeding him Alfalfa and I used to feed him Dengie Alfa A. I have tried to feed him the Dengie Alfalfa Pellets but he doesnt like them (fussy old man! hehe)

My vet mentioned that you can get alfalfa as a oil, like veg and sunflower oil.
Does anyone know where you can get it from?

Have you looked att he Mollichaff Alfa A oil?

My horse didn't like the Dengie Alfa A oil but happily eats the mollichaff one
 
I haven't a clue about Alfalfa oil, but have you had a look at the simple systems feed website? There maybe something there you could try him with.

Sorry I think my post was a bit confusing. My horse cant eat any type of chaff because of his teeth condition. I cant feed mollichaff, dengie chaff or even products that have chaff in them like spillers happy hoof or dodsen safe and sound.

At the moment I have to feed him pasture mix and sugar beet.
It is an OIL that I am looking for so would be in a bottle that I could pour over his dinner.

Any one know where I can get it?

Must say I have never heard of it - although that doesn't mean it doesn't exist! I am intrigued to know, though, what benefit 'oil of alfalfa' would have over normal oils that are fed to horses?
 
what about alfa beet - it's a mixture of sugarbeet and alfalfa and it's soaked.
I find dengie are quite good at sending samples to see your horse will eat it if you ask.
 
if just wanting the oil to add calories to his feed, i would try vegetable oil or corn or soya oil (depends on what is on offer at supermarket!!) if worried about fibre content in his diet, as his teeth are the problem, fast fibre by allen and page is very good! soaks up to a nice slop! a nice oily conditioning mash called coolstance, is also available. used to be called boomerang. keeps them fat and shiny and doesnt blow the brain! never come across an alphalfa essential oil tho.
 
bomerang, now marketed as coolstance is copra meal. i think the oil is coconut. most like it but do introduce slowly so they acquire the taste, easy and quick to soak and feed.

In regards to wanting to feed Alfalfa oil instead of veg or sunflower oil its because the vet and physio says the stuff in alfalfa helps promote muscle condition and hold muscle tone more apparently (which my boy needs being old)

I'll def look for the alfabeet and coolstance, they sound good.

Altho maybe as its just that I want to put muscle tone on maybe there is something else other than alfalfa that would work.

Does anyone know of something I could feed (that doesnt have chaff in) to help put muscle tone on an old horse.

The part of alfalfa that would promote muscle condition is its protein content - unfortunately even if you did find an 'oil of alfalfa' it would not contain protein as that would be removed in the extraction process.

Both the AlfaBeet and Coolstance suggested have good levels of protein so definitely worth a try.
 
I think you'll be ending up with soya, corn or veg oil. I thought from your post that he could have Alfa but no chaff. Why not just leave it out if he isn't allowed it and is fine on his mix and sugarbeet? Or you could see if you have fresh Lucerne near you - ask your hay man. We fed it a lot in the spring/summer and is cut and delivered to the door - the horses love it. I'm assuming your horse can eat hay? Is so and you want to bulk his feed add some hay. allen & page calm & condition is good for top line, and its a mash feed, along with their fast fibre which is also mash and could be used as a hay replacer for those with no teeth
there are lots of mash fibre based feeds - rowan & barbery i think its called do some as do simple systems ( i am thinking on moving onto them)
flax oil is good for joints & weight but never heard of alfa oil only
