Alfalfa - fizzy or not?

One of mine (the usually laid back one) becomes very fizzy on alfafa.
The other one who has a tendency to be a bit of a nutter is fine with it.

OK...thats a worry then! He needs condition but is a nutter on most fooeds. Is Baileys outshine better than just oil on its own?

I feed the molasses free version and it's fine for my horse who gets very silly on anything with molasses, even though the digestible energy in it is higher than normal Alfa-A - which is just Alfalfa plus molasses.

Full alfalfa chaff sends mine a bit crackers, he's generally very reactive to the majority of feed that was ever invented though! He copes ok with the spillers chaff that's partly alfalfa.

Alfa no way blows his mind. I have a andalucian . I now use simple system brilliant no additives my boy is doing really well. He is a good doer and I had to be Sooooo careful what I gave him even carrots and apples (the sugar) effected him.

Outshine is awesome for weight gain, it's just so expensive, but only feed 1 cup a day - you see results quickly. It's better than oil, but don't feed both.

I had real trouble getting weight on mine - went to nutritionist - changed to top line cubes, balancer (the balanc has made a huge difference), handful alfa a and cup of outshine and they look great, real improvement in my 22 year old, he is winning All round him.

Enfys, yours is the proper unadulaterated version though. I seem to remember that DEngie have bought out a molasses free version, I will go look today.

TRavelmad - he is already on the topline cubes I may well go and get some outshine. He looks great in his coat, is bright eyed and bushy tailed but just everytime you see a bit of weight on he loses it again 2 days later.
He is being worm counrted again next week and see if there is anything there. (He was riddled with worms when I got him)..

Mine certainly has a lot more energy on the Dengie mollasses-free version (which is why I feed it) but I wouldn't say she's fizzy.

Alfalfa has always sent my horses loopy and I have heard others say it makes there's itchy. The only time I havn't had a problem with alfalfa was when feeding it to very fit racehorses in hard work. From my own experience it doesn't seem to help much with weight gain vs using hifi either. Does he get good quality adlib hay/haylage?

He has ad lib hay and is out during the day with decent enough grass. He has 2 scoops a day of baileys top line and just a bit of plain chaff, pink powder and soya oil(over 2 feeds). I think there must be a problem internally, anything else I have ever owned would be fat on all that! He is worked 5/6 days a week for about an hours hack or half hours schooling.

How long has he been on this exact diet without improving? And how thin is he? Proper 'see the ribs' thin or just a bit lean and angular?

Clodagh is he a tb?

my tb is a pain, i never had a skinny horse till him and it panicked me so much (thus why i went to nutritionist in first place)

just had a chat with vet today about him. he stresses all the time bout everything which is why we know think he is skinny as bloods/ worm count etc dont show anything.

a few tips for you:

if you go with the balancer, topline cubes (which are cheaper if you buy them as racehorse cubes - exact same stuff), outshine and scoop alfa a - maybe also try a calmer?

If he is getting 2 scoops of cubes it may also be too much for him in 1 meal with the rest of it - if you speak to the baileys nutritionsit - they do free online consultations i think - they can say exactly how much to feed but i realised i was feeding too much in 1 feed and it wasnt being absorbed so watch that :)

oh... i also tried a few weeks of probiotic (baileys digest plus) to get his gut bacteria back in action - tried it on both and the difference in other horses dropping etc was good, that might help?

Outshine is better than just oil as it contains Anti oxidants. Old contains a lot of free radicals which damage cells. Anti oxidants rem these from the body. Outshine is brilliant for weight gain.
