Alfalfa pellets... Any good?

Alfalfa is very expensive here at the moment and is, in fact, the main (erm... pretty much ONLY) forage for horses in this part of Argentina. I was wondering wether pellets are a good alternative, or if they are lower in fibre and so less desirable than the real thing (which isn't of particularly good quality, either!)
My gut tells me to stick with the baled stuff; gives them more to chew and longer chew-time....

One of my horses is on full livery and they use this stuff. They soak it like sugar beet. My horse seems to like it, but then she'll trough anything.
