Alfalfa sensitive horses

Glad he’s improved so quickly!

I would guess it’s genetic, similar to Asian flush response to alcohol in humans. It would make an interesting study as to what the gene variation is in Appys that causes the reaction. Not sure if any feed companies would sponsor it though!

I am frankly stunned. Until this one, I really thought that people were exaggerating. Sorry everyone!

I am SO relieved. I thought that gelding him had ruined him. And I bought him for his temperament!

What non-alfalfa chaffs do people recommend?

if you want a bog standard chaff rather than a 'no sugar, nothing added' option then Mollichaff Calmer has no alfalfa in

Its in a surprising amount of chaff, I thought that the Dengie HiFi range was the non alfalfa range but the HiFi range also contains alfalfa

Mine not only had extremely loose droppings she also was very irritable. I thought she had ulcers and it wasn’t until I spoke to my vet who said to try her without any alfalfa did we realise!

You see you should listen to those who know! :D :D :D

I can't believe it though PaS. It's so extreme!

For the last three days, let out of the barn in the morning, ran across yard, ran back into barn, ran into lower yard where he is supposed to be, over to the gate, had to be told to leave off staring into the field and go in his box and eat his breakfast.

This morning. Pootled out of barn and straight into his stable.

His whole demeanour has changed. Now how can that possibly be because of no more than 100g of compressed alfalfa pellets?

But I haven't changed anything else. I had to see it with my own eyes to believe it!

My Appy who was sensitive to alfalfa, also could not cope with carrots, had very similar effect , which was not good for either of us! I haven't tried the current Appy on either, as I do not want to take the risk, having seen what she was like when some "kind" soul was chucking cattle creep feed over the wall for her!

I'll stay away from carrots too then, thanks for the tip.
