I know a few people with 510s and one pulls with a Ford Explorer, (with one 17.2hh horse and sometimes a 15hh as well) another with a LWB Showgun for two horses over 16hh, another with a Dihatsu Fourtrack.

I'm keeping a careful watch on this thread!
People on my yard with the 510 used to tow with a disco, defender and bmw 4x4 with no problems.
I'm looking at a shogun this weekend which will hopefully be ok for towing a 510, as I can't afford a disco.

But you'll only be towing the one at any given time won't you?

Towing two requires serious grunt

A Disco would be heavy enough I think - at 85% of Kerbweight they're about 2000kg, which would be a 510 plus two small/average horses.

I had an ancient toyota landcruiser, lovely, very heavy vehicle, automatic, it towed well, but slowly, very safely.

I have been bestowed (by my darling husband) a disco now, and it is brill and quicker! (I also get central locking which is handy)

I would never go below a 4x4 large vehicle, to a car, e.g. an estate car, NO WAY I know someone who crashed with one horse in, because of the weight ratio problem, going downhill, snaking... awful.

You won't believe this, but the horse in question survived, and only had a few scrapes, backed out bless him, whilst it was on its side, he had to duck as he is 16.3. He has always gone in a trailer ever since, no problems, and he is the horse in my signature, the one in black starry costume!

Make sure it can pull over 2000kg ?

I tow with a long wheel base Mitsubishi Pajero, 2.8 automatic diesel. It is fairly old (L reg), but I have towed from Essex to Devon and most weekends for the last 3 months have towed at least 70 miles with a 16.2 heavy cob mare and a range of other horses.

It tows great, cruises at 55mph and is really stable. It is quite 'thirsty' as a run around, but not impossible.

Budget 2007: how much car tax you pay
22 March 2007

• New road tax rules cause confusion
• Band G cars will pay highest VED
• See our tables below to see new VED

Confused about how much road tax you will pay this year? If your car was registered after March 2001, the price you pay will depend on the amount of CO2 your car emits. You can find this data in the Running Costs of individual car reviews on whatcar.com.

Diesel/petrol cars registered after March 1 2001
Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee
Band B (101-120g/km CO2) £35
Band C (121-150g/km CO2) £115
Band D (151-165g/km CO2) £140
Band E (166-185g/km CO2) £165
Band F (over 185g/km CO2)£205

Diesel and petrol cars registered after March 23, 2006
Band G (226g/km and above ) £300*

* In the run up to the Budget it was leaked that the highest polluting cars would pay £400 a year in road tax. This will be for Band G cars from 2008.

Alternative fuel cars registered after March 1 2001
Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee
Band B (101-120g/km CO2) £15
Band C (121-150g/km CO2) £95
Band D (151-165g/km CO2) £120
Band E (166-185g/km CO2) £145
Band F (over 185g/km CO2)£190

Alternative fuel cars registered after March 23 2006
Band G (226g/km and above ) £285

Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001
1549cc or under £115
Over 1549cc £180

I forgot about all the people on my current yard!!
Two tow with Discos and one with a Vauxhall Frontera (but smaller horses)
I used to tow a 510 with my 2.8 SWB shogun but again it was two 15hh horses.

I would always favour an automatic over a manual box too. MUCH smoother ride

well Scoopy! that sorts that then! LOL

I must sound really stupid here, but I am unsure as to how much tax my car costs - that said, when I had the car before, I spent from May to September without tax as I hadn't realised it had run out because the previous owner hadn't sent his reg form off so I didn't get a reminder - and of course, I didn't look at it! DUR

I stick to my scribbly calendar much more now, to think what could have happened! doesn't bear thinking about.....

I've got a Toyota Landcruiser Colorado, pre 2001, it tows two 16.2 horses in my IW 510, the annual tax was £205.

I've got a 505 but not much diff in weight to a 510 and i have a discovery but am changing back to a defender at the end of the year! You deff need a large 4 wheel drive but i don't think anything other than land rover, defender discovery, range rover are capable of legally towing 3.5t. I know it wouldn't weight that much but gives you peace of mind. They also have smaller engines than most big 4x4 (2.5 as apposed to 2.8/3ltr) but still have good MPG.

I used to pull my 510 with a Ford Explorer, I now pull it with a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 diesel.

My load is normally 2 x 16.2hh med wieght horses.

Moonwalker, be careful with your santa fe, family at my old yard towed a smaller trailer with 2 horses under 16hh and it wrecked it. The engine was fine, it was the clutch, crankshaft??? and something to do with the axle. It was a new car, the dealership said it would do the job but when he started having problems they said the warranty wouldnt cover it as it wasnt up to the job.

I tow two 17'2 in my 510 with a Nissan Navarra. 2.4 Turbo diesel. Mine is a 2002 model and it was listed with a towing capacity of 3 tonnes. The new ones are 2.5 tonnes. I have towed with it for 5 years - no problems whatsoever and we have some serious hills down here

I tow with a Mercedes ML 2.7 diesel automatic. I think it tows up to 3.5 tonnes although I only two one horse.

It is the best 4X4 I have towed with ever! IMHO it tows better than a disco.

I use it as an everyday car too and it is super, not to thirsty and very comfy

We tow with a 2.8 LWB Pajero 2.8 and it is great. Perfectly legal, tows like a dream and you always have enough power and brakes to cope with all terrains.
