Well they are doing well, all temps and green noses are clear just the odd cough left to go but my mare who iv had for 10 yrs has now gone down with a rash over her whole body, been of the medcine for a couple of weeks so it's not that but she's never had anything like this. Her coat is also dull which it's always shiney and you can see your face in her coat. It's small lumps under the skin and really scabby. Now could it be a reaction to the bug? Or ideas, iv taken all supplements away and just left her with high fibre cubes and speedibeet. She's also lost topline which has never happened. The vet is back out soon anyway and she's fine in herself but just wonder if it's a knock on effect to the bug. Anybody experienced anything like this.

When you say vet coming "soon" how soon do you mean? Friend's mare started out similar to yours and ended up three weeks in horspital with mega immune problems followed by months of medication.

Did they have antibiotics, by any chance?
Skin rashes can be side effects of antibiotics in humans. It's a"call the doctor" symptom in humans, so I would assume it's a "call the vet" in horses - at least worth a phone call to find out what they think :)

My lad hasn't been ill but has had a load of little lumps on the near side where his rug went. They were itchy and then scabbed. I am still taking them off now, the scabs are small yellow crystals and hair comes away. I had the vet out but the answer was that it could be anything. Antibiotics didn't really help. I took him off dengie alfalfa and he seems much happier so I think it's either a reaction to that or possibly him getting too hot in his rug, which resulted in rain scald effects. No definitive answer from the vet. My lad is getting better but had a month off because he was too itchy to work.

Had a horse who presented a bit like that and it turned out to be an unusual form of ringworm.

One of ours went down with a systemic ringworm infection, It was shocking to see her in the grips of it, and she lost a lot of weight in the process. We had to use Grisol-V powder from the vets to sort it, very toxic stuff and me being the only bloke in the house was the only one who could handle the powder and do the feeds as it affects unborn babies.

Strange. I took a TB on a few years ago and when she arrived, I couldn't believe the state she was in! Her coat dull, she was skin and bones and was covered in scurfy, scabby skin. It was thought at first to be ring worm, but in the end put down to getting too hot in her rugs (previous owner smothered her with rugs, because she was so thin) she was actually quite a warm horse and didn't need half the amount of rugs on! After a few weeks of teatree oil shampoos and a few of diluted hibiscrub washes, she was tip top, and soon put weight back on.

I'm not saying this is what's wrong with yours, but worth a thought??

Scabby, sounds like a skin infection of some sort to me. With the illness and antibiotics her immune system will have taken a big hit and this can often allow secondary infections to thrive. Hopefully the vet will clarify and know what treatment will help, I hesitate to suggest anything except an immune boost/detox supplement. Fingers crossed.

ps. I'm glad to hear they're getting over that nasty infection.
