It's been a quiet time for the past few months with Skylla taking 3 weeks to pop an abscess, and my ex vets ballsing up quite spectacularly with Topaz which meant for 6 weeks off before I could get her booked in with the veterinary hospital.

However all have now been given to go ahead to start work again, so we had a couple of quiet weeks, hacking, lunging and doing pole work. Last weekend we took them up to the gallops for some fitness work.

Skylla is figuring her legs out about how to go fast , but still has the stamina of a sloth :o. However she is, as ever, so lovely to take out :). Topaz enjoyed herself but is so not fast :o though she is deceptively fit! I then went fence judging at the British Riding club ODE at Somerford on the Sunday, had a top day and saw lots of seriously classy horses!

Onto this weekend and first up we took Doodle and Topaz for a hack, the oldie does like to get out every now and again and has taken to screaming the place down when left behind (with the rest of the herd mind), so I think she doesn't want to be totally retired just yet ;).

I then decided now was the time to really do some proper jump training with little Skylla, :eek3:, now she's popped the odd log but nothing too structured. Made a little line of canter poles to a small cross and she had a whale of a time ! Left it there but think it will be definitely incorporated into our weekly schedule from now on :).

(hope the link works I may have broken my phone :o so cannot upload it to youtube sorry!)

Onto yesterday and I've had to do many a rethink this year with my dressage plans for Topaz! I think we're back on track now with Medium regionals (she qualified surprisingly easily :eek3:), and we'll see if we can squeeze another Adv Med sheet out for AF's but our only option is AM98 :eek3:!

So we already had the Q for regionals, vet said bring back into work and crack on, so I entered Somerford :eek3:. Thinking I should probably try and get her out as it has been 2 months from our last comp and only three weeks back in work we headed over to Cockshot for a bash at M61 and the regional test M75.

First up M61 and we both decided it was just too hot!!! So a little rusty, wobbly and just a touch flail'y in places :o. An unsurprising and fair 61% for fourth place.

However this gave me the kick up the bum to actually ride in the second test and stop wilting about, like a wilty melty thing :o. Topaz was not a fan of this new found energy and definitely felt sleeping was more favorable :rolleyes3:! However bless the little fatty hippo, she pulled her socks up with grace and gave it a good shot . The canter-halt was pretty well controlled, first SI was good, 10m circle nice, travers I had to give her a bit of a kick to say go on :o. Half-passes felt nice, just need a bit more of the pizzazz I know she has. We go a bit head tilty in the second SI and I didn't position the second travers well enough. Mediums definitely didn't really happen, but then it is her weakest part. Walk we scored 7 for collected but an 8 for extended  (we love the heat ;)), our right pirouette is always sticky but we are getting better and managed a decent 6.5 (left got a 7 woo). Canter I thought went well, but judge not quite as much of a fan with mostly 6.5's, but again her weaker pace so I just need to really get her supple and in self-carriage. First simple change we collapsed in a heap a little so a deserved 5 :o, but second was much more balanced for a 7! Final halt managed a 7.5 too, (we are good a standing still ).

Managed 66% for second place, which for the regional test I'm really pleased with her. Everything felt good we just need to sharpen it all up, neaten up the lateral work with positioning and get that relaxed, engaged, self-carriage that's really easy to achieve right ;). Bring on regionals, go go fatty hippo !

Plus I think she has lost a bit of weight?

I have salted caramel cookies for anyone who gets to the end of all that waffle !

Love the jumping. Naturally :D. Glad they are back into work for a nice summer of fun.

^^ this! Such a relief (even if it is stupid busy) when everyone is fit and well. Great update, has skylla got any more outings coming up?

Somerford is really early ! I'm so used to my regionals being in August it's always a surprise that the regionals are already happening elsewhere :p

 She really surprised me as I didn't think she'd enjoy it that much, fingers crossed no more wheels fall off!!!

Not yet, I will look at getting her out for a couple more prelims to see if I can qualify her for the Midway champs, so we have about a month to do that. Just happy everyone is sound and happy at the moment!

Haha Somerford is always early so I fit it into our yearly schedule as it's a great venue and show! Where will you be heading?

We have Mount Ballan first weekend in August. She's doing 3 days there this weekend for the welsh champs/another AF so I'm HOPING she will be happy and confident in the ring by then. But probably not, this is Kira we're dealing with...

Having rearranged everyone's schedules to avoid Hartpury AF there's a slim chance I might make it to midways if I can raise the cash... ;) so you better bleddy well get S qualified :D

 fear not Topaz will def be going to contest the medium! I'll tell Skylla she needs to pull her socks up and get those 65% scores!!!

I'm sure Kira will love Mount Ballan ;).

YAY! So great to read this update, I'm so pleased that it's all go for you once again!

The jumping looks very sweet indeed, I look forward to seeing more of this in future :) (am now also following your FB page lol)

Great scores for Topaz, well done for not melting :D

Great scores for Topaz, well done for not melting :D

Thank you :), Skylla was so exited hope she carries on the enthusiasm! :o not much exciting happens on the page but thank you :). We melted a lot  but very pleased overall!

Yay! Glad to see you getting to crack on.

It's fab I'm so relieved! We've got to take Topaz back to horse'pital is a couple of weeks for a reassessment and to see if she needs the steroid injections, (hence the weight loss mission :o) but she's come back into work super :). Hope Skye is back all guns firing again soon too.

I've got the go ahead to get back on at the weekend, and start on 20 minutes. Spend this week doing tonnes of stretching, massage, and groundwork / lunging / long reining with her.

I am so relieved and cannot wait to be back on track with my partner in crime. We're both bored stiff! <3

Great to see them both up and running! Topaz looks well and those are great scores especially after only 3 weeks back in work. Good luck at Somerford!!

Fab news :).

Looks well as in a lean mean dressage machine? :o

Yeah I'm really pleased, the first was a bit rubbish but it gave us a kick for the second :), Somerford is a lovely venue so I'm quite excited.

Definitely a lean mean dressage machine :p
Great update - love love love baby skylla jumping, it's just all so exciting!!!
Fabulous that Topaz seems to have bounced right back to form :D hopefully you'll have a good run at regionals

 Why thank you, Topaz assures me she is now so thin she needs extra food ;).

Skylla finds life exciting, but I'm thrilled she enjoyed the jumping as I wasn't sure she would :).

To be fair Topaz was going well before the break but I'm really pleased that the break seems to have done her good rather than set her back.

Racing snake for sure :D :D

what was wrong with T?

LOL  I'll tell her that she will be pleased!

She came in from the field mid May flinching over her back whilst I was grooming her, called vet who examined her and wanted a speedy referral for a bone scan, que much stressing by me and mum. Vet then did nothing, except mess her clinical notes up, mess the insurance claim form up (thankfully I found out before he could send a fraudulent claim to investigate something that didn't need investigating), go on holiday for a week and half leaving her with no referral, treatment or plan and make the biggest mess of the situation that could possibly be made.

He even now, will not accept any wrong doing, apologize for the upset, write a letter explaining her clinical notes which the new vet asked for, amend her clinical notes so they are correct (he used my opinion as a clinical fact and didn't state it was client opinion), or indeed even speak to me. The only time he has spoken to me since the call out was when I went in person to the practice to find out what the hell was going on...

So I made my own referral to see a vet who was recommended to me, who listened to me about what had been the problem and agreed that x-rays and scans would be appropriate (first vet refused this), he found three vertebrae were too close causing inflammation of the ligament and minor bony changes. He was very positive, said for her age (14 this year) it really wasn't bad and to bring her back into work, loose some weight :o and then we can re-assess in about 4/6 weeks about whether to inject or not.

It had been possibly the most awful 6 weeks I have had for stress and worry, so I am so, so thankful Topaz is ok and the prognosis is good!

Good grief! I understand the weight thing then :). what a nightmare for you though.

It still seems surreal written down... but yes the fatty hippo look is not helping and if we do do the steroid injections we need her as lean as we can manage! It's a shame as she came out of winter perfect, but 6 weeks off on the grass undid all our hard work!
