"All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl."
This quote always make me feel emotional whenever I see it.
For one it makes me happy since I know my pony has been loved by three young girls through her life. And I'm the last one to have her. She's made three girls so happy and made their dreams come true. This is a mare who hasn't had a easy start in life but she's given us all the best time of our lives. From local yard fancy dress to HOYS.

However It also makes me sad, some horses have never known this and will never. Or they've known it and it's all gone wrong for them.

Sad post // over

If my friend is right and I am inclined to think that she is, all adult riders revert to being eight years old when hacking with friends. So all our horses are still loved by little girls at heart. :)

My mums new ex-racer is 9 and although he has never been mistreated ect he was bred to do a job and it's clear he has never had anyone love him.
He's a very well behaved, well mannered boy but he is emotionally very withdrawn, he's quiet and shy and nervous. He doesnt know what a treat is and if you go to hug him or stroke him he flinches away.
We've had him a couple of months now and despite being a more mature lady my mum is definitely his first little girl to love him and his sweet little character is starting to come out.

My horse on the other hand although an ex-racer only raced once and was trained by his owner. I got him as a 4yr old and I'm his girl that adores him to death. He is totally different to my mums horse, he is self confident, happy and has the biggest character going, he assumes everyone loves him and he's very 'me. Attention.now', he oozes the fact he's adored out of every pore and is he is happy in who he is.

I think it's sad how the horses who are treated as numbers shut down but then again quite often they don't mind as they don't know anything different, as long as they get fed and have equine company they know their place :(.

I think that is so true. I had to wait decades to get my boy and nothing has changed, except that I can pay the bills as well and drive to the yard!

The worst I saw was a few weeks back at Beeston market, a mare had been left there and although she wasn't in top condition you could tell once she had been someone's pride and joy. She had her head out, was friendly to everyone who went past. But it was so sad, she didn't have a clue what was going on. And I know they don't actually know but I think some get the jist that not all is well. But this mare looked ljke she was waiting for someone to come back.
Hurts knowing that she was probably someone's life.

I don't think I coudl ever go to the sales, I would be heartbroken :o

I love the ugly horses (I mean that in a nice way!), but feel desperately sorry for them :(

My horse is incrediblu spolit - but my last horse never got past the 'just being a horse' stage, and I had him five years :(

Yup agree with post above; it just wouldn't do for me to go to a horse sale, I'd come back with a whole string of poor old horses if I could...... totally heartbreaking.

Agree that all horses deserve, at least once, to be loved by a little girl - wonder if this includes little girls grown up????? :) I'm still as "pony mad" at er um 50, as I was at 15, so hope this counts??

I love this quote, I feel like a little girl when I see my boy.
I bought him last week, I'm 50 and he's my first horse, I've waited for this since I was about 8 years old. In the past the time was never right, recently it dawned on me if I don't do it now I never will and I couldn't bear that.
I am so happy I have a big silly grin most of the time, stupid I know!
I have a lot to learn, but I am lucky to know lots of people who can give me advice and try to keep a straight face when I ask stupid questions.lol!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I feel for the horses that go to the sales , as i took on one from the sales , luckily she had been loved before and was very happy to take up a new love with me....but it must be awful for those souls who have been loved and then find themselves cast out to an unknown future ...is would be best NOT to be loved ever , than to have been loved and lost.

awww poor horse at the sales thats heart breaking ! when i got my lad it was a fast in and out of ireland and when he came over to me thats when i realised im his 1st love he was bought by his 1st owner very very poor she told me she kept him a year then sold him into a dealing yard thats were i found him in good health by then but he was clearly one of many he came and he wasnt what he is today he calls from the field for me to bring him in gives me kisses hes a dream to ride hes just great fun and no one could ever love him as much as i do but then again no one will ever get the chance to because hes all myn and going no were

My husband refers to my horse the 'oversized My Little Pony'. He is my first horse (at 30) and hasn't been easy, I bought him at 9 as his 4th owner so he had been passed around a bit. However that was 3 1/2 years ago and life with him just gets better and better. He is very much my pony and yes I do love him like I would had I got him when I was 5! Just 25 years late, that's all!!!

I know many people DON'T actually 'love' their horses in the sense that you love a pet - they are working animals after all - but I am afraid I DO!!! As does my friend with whom I rent the yard, our horses are so spoilt and we are a silly pair of grown women but we don't care!

My name is Janette, I'm 48 and I love my pony!

I waited til I was 42 to get a horse, and it's a lifetime's worth of love.
When I was a kid, 'our sort' didn't do horses (or ballet etc). I got one ride a year at a trekking centre on holiday - but I read everything, watched everything - and I waited.
Then I married a man who came from a family that had watched a marriage break up due to horses.... So I waited a bit more
Then I got my chance. And it's a passionate affair now. :D

OH will never be horsey, but I live with his parrots (flapping things worry me immensley) so he can tolerate Star. And it's an arrangement which works. :D

For some reason this quote gets to me too, even makes me well up a little.

I'm just as pony mad now as I was when I was 8... Over 20yrs ago now! (where did that time go...) when it comes to horses I'm a massive kid, which is probably completely sad but isn't it good to be in touch with your inner child?

Have been known fairly recently to be riding with friends and we hoiked our stirrups up and galloped round pretending to be jockeys... Cringe! Old enough to know better but we were in hysterics :D

Totally agree with you OP. It is so true. Captain had been abused and neglected, also been a pro-comp horse and working horse all his life. He was incredibly difficult and at times dangerous when we got him. It is down to the love of a not so little girl that he has become an amazing horse, gentle , kind and happy.

Count me in! I had to wait until I was 38 to get my boy and now he gets all the love I have from the 8 year old inside. He came over from Ireland and looked a bit shell shocked when I first saw him. But you could see he was dying to make friends. Now he follows me around like a puppy dog, ambles over to see me in the field and rests his nose on my back when I'm picking out his feet. I'm head over heals in love!!

That is so sad/.:(

I'm welling up here......

Sounds like Black Beauty in the sales:(

I am in my 30s.....but I still 'canter' when no one watches.....when I jump over a puddle on the beach when I'm walking the dogs...I am doing it on a horse in my mind.

I walk along (when no one watches) swinging my head and pretending I am evading the bit.

And sometimes I'll 'spook' or 'buck'....just for the fun of it

Still a little girl? I think so;)

That saying reminds me of a sad, fat, little hairy pony with the worst sweet itch I've ever seen. He was given away as a freebie as the owners couldn't cope with his condition. He came to a tiny little 7 year old girl who had a gift that made all animals love her.
Knowledgeable mum got the sweet itch under control and the little girl would find him waiting for her after school each day. I used to take them out hacking with instructions from mum, not to let them go too fast. Yeah, right. Out on the track on my warmblood, the mini duo would take off with me trying to keep up as they motorbiked around bends laughing and generally behaving like hooligans. Riding home, little girl would hang off his back to pull at the hedges, flipping branches as they went. Little hairy boy never batted an eyelid.
He became the best pony she ever had, winning every class at pony club and looking so smart out hunting.
He blossomed because of that little girl and her sense of fun and gentleness, combined with an instinctive knowledge of understanding horses.

I sometimes 'spook' at stuff if I am riding my bike, makes you wonder sometime if we do bring our horses' spooks on ourselves :D

When you are walking along the pavement and someone is ahead of you...do you just HAVE to speed up and pass them?

I'd be the Arab refusing to go at the back of the ride, fighting until I got to the front....and then I'd spook and want to go back again.

OMG I AM my horse

There's a horse in a field near me who has been my himself for 5 years (at least!) now. He looks so miserable, and want to have a word with his owners, but don't want to take him on, and don't want to pressure them and them then sell or pts (he is about 19).

He was a lovely hack for her too, but then she had kids and now he's ignored :(

I was crying at Beeston all day and had to leave the pen area because of the poor horse. I just don't get why people would do this to their friends. There was another gelding aswelk who was atleast in his 30s, he looked like he'd given so many children fun times, but now he just looked ready to give up. I wanted to buy him just to let him be PTS :(. I'm never going again til I can buy something myself
