Hi everyone

I was just wondering what peoples arrangements were as regards to hay and straw/bedding. Does your livery price include hay and bedding or do you have to buy in your own.
The yard where I have my 2 horses doesn't include this but we can buy hay and straw from YO if we want.

Our arrangement means that we have a board in the barn and as we take bales of each we mark it down and then hay we pay him and straw cash is supposed to go in a pot to buy the next lot (totally stupid idea to me:confused: but hey!) only this isn't working as ppl aren't keeping a note of what they use and we now have 30 straw bales that aren't accounted for and YO is on the warpath!!!!
So just interested really as to what any one else does?? :D

We buy ours through the YO..basically he literally tells the farmer the quantity and it's dropped off. We give him the money and he doesn't charge for ordering - he just likes being in the loop. It's useful as the farmers stopped selling to those that hey didn't know so they would always deliver if done through the YO as they were friendly.

It's like £4 for a small for of hay, £3 for a small bale of straw, £20 for a large bale of hay.. or something like that!

They are all out 24/7 now anyway!

We dpn't have the option of buying off of yard owner so I buy from farmer. Another yard I know of, one of the conditions are that they HAVE to buy hay from him so it's either £78 per month or they pay £48 per month plus hay from him (at £30 a big bale).

All horses are out over winter.

I have always been on yards where its either included in the price or the YO charges you for their own hay/haylage. Does save a lot of hassle. Bedding wise again on part it has been included, DIY usually bought my own although I have been on a yard where you had to buy off YO. At the moment a few of us have a delivery, this may be an option for you, it works well for us

We use shavings if stabled which are bought from outside suppliers.Whole yard does as YO got annoyed with folk practically changing entire bed everyday when we were on straw beds. You couldn't tell them they didn't need to clear whole bed!!
Haylage is supplied by YO then cost divided between whole yard as he makes it himself doesn't charge too much and usually pretty decent stuff

I know of a yard that runs the same system, works well as long as everyone is honest and not 'forgetfull'. Also the YO needs to be good with the cash and not use it for other things.

Yard I am on at present we buy in our own hay & bedding & have an area of the barn to store it all in.

I was at a yard where you could either buy in or buy from the YO. You would mark on the board what you needed i.e. bale of shaving & bale of hay & YO would drop it round to your stable & keep a note of what you'd had & put it on your bill.

We can either buy off YO or get ourselves. I buy hay from him as he charges a set amount/week (£9) for hay and you can use as much as you like. Plus there is no extra storage space to bring ur own hay, u have to keep it off site.

I buy my own bedding tho altho you can put an order on the notice board and he delivers weekly. There is space to store up to 3 bales/stable whether u buy from YO or not.

We pay an additional monthly rate in winter for hay and bedding (as many haynets as you need, one bag of shavings per week), which works out pretty well; if we need any extra bedding we mark it on a sheet and it gets added to the livery bill at the end of the month. In summer we're charged individually for haynets and bags of bedding.

Over the years I have had all inclusive, bought from YO and bought in myself and have to admit I prefer getting it myself. When it was included I was always worried about how much I used etc and there were sometimes snide comments and when I was buying it from YO it was just a hassle and when the quality of it wasnt that great it was very hard to do anything about it. Atm I am buying it in myself I get my haylage locally and it is really good stuff and they keep me supplied all year round and I can get the bedding I want when I want. Also I find it alot easier to keep a check on all the finances...
