I can honestly say a big thanks to complete strangers!!
I had a bad accident in September which has resulted in me not being able to walk at present, let alone ride.
The accident has totally changed my life as I have a whole rehab road looking to walk with my metal leg and never thought I would ride again! But since finding this forum I am itching to try and ride again - I know wont be for a while but this forum keeps me going esp when I have really bad days - I am, well was a very independant lass and miss my horses so much and I am sure they miss me - so once again Thanks to you ALL x

i had a bad riding accident 33 yrs ago when i was mid-teens...spent 9 months in hospital..luckily didnt lose any limbs, but i too, was told i may not ride again, but was determined to do so..took me a long time to get back into the saddle.
am now finding riding difficult again, so may take up Driving instead!! Have you thought of Driving?

what happened to you, if i'm not being too nosey?

Really silly fall from the little grey in the photos - got my foot caught in strirrup and he kicked my right leg to pieces! Hence a lovely metal job. It so sad as noone will ride him since my fall and it was not his fault he just spooked as all horses can!! I have turned him away and when ever I pop to see him he gallops over and it breaks my heart how everyone is scared of him - Driving I will defo be looking into that.. Thanks JM07

You sound like you have the determination to get back on and go for it. Good luck with it. Thats so nice that your boy still comes galloping up to you x

I think you have been very brave and I wish you well with your recovery and return to riding, it is possible to ride with missing/artificial limbs as I used to teach a group at Westerham EC years ago, good luck and keep us posted.

I am saddened that everyone is scared of your horse, these things happen it was an accident just that

Think of it as heart warming when he canters over to you

I hope you recover soon and get nack into riding as well, this forum has helped me as id got to the point where I was loosing interest in riding as my boy was being so naughty, but chatting to horsey people got my interest back up and ive now got him back into work and behaving a bit more.

What a lovely post, well obviously not about the accident of course, but its nice to hear someone getting something good back from this forum despite if they cant ride or if they don't currently own a horse.

Its great that you itching to get back in the saddle, sorry to hear about accident and wishing you a full and speedy recovery.

You are a very brave and determined person from the sound of it and I have no doubt you will get back to riding again.

I dont mean to be nosey, but do you have lots of metalwork in your leg? I only ask as I work in orthopaedics.

You could also consider side saddle as your right leg was involved.

The grey looks gorgeous, I have a soft spot for greys.

You poor thing. Sounds like a terrible freak accident, one that could happen to any one of us at any time.

Good luck with your rehab and I look forward to seeing the pictures and reading the reports when do eventually make it back into the saddle.

All the best.

Thought I would be able to work straight away!!! Its so hard when you cant look after your own horse.
I shall have to be patient and do as my physio says. Hope you recover soon.

The long struggle and ups and downs of physio will be worth it in the long run. Are you on Facebook? If you are there is a group on there for Horse and Hound forum addicts. A lot of us have added each other as friends even though we have never met. ,It is a good way to have new contacts who are horse mad and a lot more personal than this. Have a look.

Sounds like you have a very positive attitude, I am a firm believer in what doesn't kill us serves to make us stronger!

It's great that your horse gallops over to you

It's such a shame no-one will ride him. I hope that you are able to do some equine pastime soon, be it driving or side saddle. Good luck in your continued recovery, have patience it'll happen because you want it bad enough xxx

Great to hear that the forum has helped you a bit. I guess most of us here have a crash story to tell, mine was my back, must be more than 20 years ago now, I also was told never ride again, and im pottering about quite happily. Keep at it, it takes a long time, pain and frustration as you wont be able to do what you want to do with your body, but its so worth it and it is truely amazing how much more you value everything.
Give your boy a carrot and hug from me when you can. Maybe one day the right person will come along to take him on for you, if that's what you would like. He looks super.

Just wishing you lots of luck with your road to recovery and a couple of quick stories to keep help you keep your hopes up.

My friend has no arms (thalidymide (sp?)) and hunts regularly, always up the front! She designed a bridle so that the reins go from the bit down to her stirrups and steers with her feet. Another friend has a back operation that was unsuccessful and left her paralysed from the waste down, she is so frustrated at not being able to ride anymore, she bought a coloured cob, liveries it at an RDA where they have a hoist to lift her on and she has started riding again

See - it can be done and I have no doubt you will be back on that little grey in the not so distant future!

I had a nasty accident 18 months ago and as a result am no longer able to ride or/and look after horses so had to sell. I'd love to know what you are doing to get back in the saddle or driving a horse.

I was in an electric wheelchair for 6 months (I had also injured my shoulder so couldn't use crutches till a second operation sorted that one out) and now still have to use a stick to walk after 3 operations on my leg/knee.

My tibia was shattered and now has 2 metal plates and loads of screws, is still very painful as is my knee too as that was dislocated and damaged in the accident and is now very arthritic and is getting worse and I need a new knee, but the consultant says I'm too young (51.....!) and is suggesting a multiple drilling of the bone ends as a temporary solution but nurse friends say don't go for it as it's very painful for months (at least 6) afterwards. If any of you have an experience of this procedure PLEASE PM me with any information.

I was told I was very lucky the accident was in Germany as if I had gone to a UK A&E my leg would have been amputated, after watching the paralympics I'm not so sure that wouldn't have been the best option.

Like you I have had terrible bouts of depression at the sudden enforced changes in my once active lifestyle and constant pain. I fully empathise with where you are coming from.

Please keep us informed of your progress as I'm sure I'm not the only one who might well benefit from your positive and active chasing of your dream.

Thank you everyone for your posts it means so much, esp as my whole family are against me ever riding again. I hope to ride/drive again and you all have helped given me the strength to keep fighting on! Thanks x

I badly broke my leg in 2005, I fractured my tibial plateau and had to have a lot of metal work put in, I also had a bone graft from my pelvis into my leg as I had compressed my bone by 2cm.
I was in plaster and non weight bearing for 2 months and basically stuck at home all day on my own.
All I had was this place and I honestly think everyone one here saved my sanity! I even went on a meet up while in plaster as a lovley forum member that I had never met before came and picked me up

I got back on the same horse afterwards and I still have him

My leg still hurts a bit and I still have a very slight limp but I can still ride.

Hope it all works out for you and you can get back to riding again xx
