i'm planning on take abby out on a wee hack for the first time in 5 months nxt week, and well i'm pooping myself

she has been so high strung recently just totally full of beans and getting a bit nervous about taking her out incase she goes loopy and ends up doing herself an injury again. some of u will remember a wee while ago i took her in the field to lunge her to start bringing her back into work and she took off and lost her footing............. ended up with a tear on her leg and 4 stitches. i remember someone saying i should maybe try a calmer or something to take the edge off her for the first couple of times out??

can anyone recommend anything i could try to just take the edge off??

Anything with magnesium may help, magnitude, magic- you could add in valerian and vit b for all round coverage but in the end how the horse behaves will be steered by how you ride it - so maybe a calmer for you too

she's been such a happy horse recently fannying about in the field, but maybe just a bit too happy lol!!

Yes and also perhaps review her feed. Perhaps she doesn't need much with 'energy' in it. Also I'd be tempted to do some in hand work first to get her back in the swing of listening to you and leading nicely then progress to walking out in hand. Build up gradually, tbh I don't think you can expect her to suddenly be calm, you have to teach her to be calm (by trusting/listening to you) as well as giving her stuff to calm her.

I wouldn't ride a horse out that wasn't calm with me on the ground. Please be careful.

I have a few friends that use Magnesium oxide (Mag ox) if you search for it on ebay its really cheap and awesome stuff without the mega cost too

she's fine on the ground totally safe, if she tries to get excited i just let her know to walk beside me and behave and she does

Hey, I have a TBx who I didnt properly hack out for 6 months
blush.gif
I went out off the farm once a week and that was in walk, with the odd trot and never in a field.

Then one day I randomly took him in a field, and cantered right the way up it

He didn't bat an eyelid

So, you never know! It can/ will be positive!

mine is in and out of work more often than I can remember ! always due to him doing somethng stupid and hurting himself.

I use Global Herbs Supercalm only give half the reccomended amount and seems to work a dream as there was a point when I couldn't even lead him in from the field.

I would defo reccomend you do some lunge work before hacking out! I would say that to anyone bringing a horse back in to work not just a physco TB.

Or if not at least get someone to walk out with you on foot !

Good luck xx

My TB went through a very spooky and difficult phase at the start of this year. I was at my wits end and he had me off so many times, I was scared to ride him. He was always on edge. I didn't find that calmers helped and I reduced his feed to next to nothing to no avail. He is a different horse now and the only thing I can put it down to is I moved from a very busy competition yard to a small farm with only 4 other horses who are all out together. There is loads of turnout. My horse is part of a herd now and has loads of room to roam and he has become so laid back. I don't know if that helps...

Be careful hacking her out at the moment, you need to put your safety first and perhaps wait until you get this little situation sorted. Hope she gets better soon, good luck

unfortunatly the field we use for lunging is not completely unusable from flooding
frown.gif
if i want to exercise her i have to hack gently

we are on a farm, poppy abby 2 other horses. poppy and abin one field the other 2 are seperate cause they fight
