All quiet at the farm this morning

It's so sad when they leave. We followed two clutches of babies this year, even getting flown into on practice flights, and having to clear up HUGE mountains of poo. And then suddenly they are gone. They look so tiny to fly all that way.

Off to have a check on mine now - they have been doing a lot of warm up flights over the last few days, and lining up on the telephone lines which is always a pre cursor to them leaving.

We had a nest in the horsebox complete with 5 babies which gave me a mini heart attack, as had to take the lorry away for 5 days of PC camp! My husband very carefully moved the nest and by some miracle the parents found them and carried on feeding their young.

Very poignant to see them go, and so look forward to their return in spring.

Safe flights to all......

I am looking forward to not getting my head toileted on. I do like them but wish their toilet habits were outside my shed not in it!

Yes, the one thing I wont miss is cleaning the **** of my horse each morning- but I do kinda like having them around . Had a late brood in my stable that only started flying last week - hope theey make it.

 i've still got two new broods just hatched, they do progress quickly, but hope they will be around a couple more weeks yet, still plenty of others around catching flies etc, i'm in north shropshire though so perhaps we're a little bit behind others down south ? love to have them around, dont worry about the mess, horses go out 24/7 from april so no horses in :) just put plenty of sawdust under the nest on the rubber mats and it cleans up wonderfully. had four nests in the four stables this year, and one in the feedroom too - just make sure the cats cant catch the adults as they fly in and out of the stables by leaving the doors open and they cant then sit on the tops of the door ! naughty cats !!!!

the summers gone really fast this year, took ages to start and then blink and you miss it - very autumnal in the mornings, loads of mushrooms in the fields a sure sign its going to start getting colder at night :(

Mine were on the telephone lines yesterday hope they have not left yet it seems only a few weeks ago that they came.
But I will be pleased to see the end of the flies!!

Yup, mine are getting ready to go. I always think it's a minor miracle when they turn up again in the spring.

They seem to have bred very successfully this year.
