Someone said something very hurtfull to me the other day, apparently I am stuipid and careless and have all the gear but no idea. I was quite shocked, i usually joke with my mum etc about the stuff I buy for my horses as she says that people at rideaway/derby house etc must think im some amazing rider!
So does it make me ridiculous and stupid that I buy the best that I can afford for my horses? I dont compete often but I have prestige saddles for my horses (my yearling will get one too) Lots of boots, bandages, bridles and the best rugs I can afford
I just work on the basis that I have a good wage, I live with parents, I have savings no family etc as too young so why cant I spend £££'s on horses that happy hack!!

Thoughts please! Appologies sometimes i word myself wrong!

Sounds like a case of the good old green eyed monster to me called Jealousy. Take no notice whatsoever, its your money and you can spend it on whatever you like. By buying the best you can afford for your horse it will no doubt last you a long time. Must admit I would rather buy something nice for my horse than go out for a meal or spend it on clothes, nails etc. People can be awful sometines, you get talked about if you look after your horse well and talked about it you dont - cant't win sometimes eh!

Happy spending ...x

My OH says that about me ;)! I think those who have said it to you are, as the other poster said, just jealous! Your money, your horse - you spend what you like!! No one's business but yours!

I think that it's your money and that you can spend it on nice things for your horse if you want. :D

I'm the same as you, I buy my horses the best quality that I can. When I need something on a budget, I trawl the internet for a quality item that is discounted or even 2nd hand and hardly used, rather than buy cheaper/lower quality new.

could be jealousy, but then again they have called you careless and said you only care about what gear ur horses have. Yet you have posted telling us all about the gear you for your horses.. and nothing about the care they receive.
just seeing it from others points of view :)

Sorry! Im not the kind who has to have a gag/pelaham coz so and so has it or bla bla! I word myself wrong!
I spend lots on Decent feed, hay, bedding,Regualr maintenance, there feet never go over 6 weeks..
They have companions, shelter, lovely fields on a private a state, stabled in winter if nessesary, the retired and yearling are happier to live out,

What's the reference to the pelham supposed to mean?

Aslong your horses are cared for and are happy then where's the need to worry about what people say? Life's too short for things like that.

I meant it as in, I wont go out and buy my horse a pelham just because I saw someone else wearing one and thought it looked good, I just used a pelham as an example!

lol oh hun people are jealous lol - as said your money and you spend as you wish - you prtray self as youngish (im oldish lol)so all i can say better spending it on your horses than throwing it up in the gutter on a saturday night as many youngsters i know do so get out spend and enjoy and years down line you will have great memories unlike them throwing up :) xxxx

Some people are so horrid, its up to you what you want to spend your hard earnt money on, take no notice of them. As a few people have said Green eye and Monster comes to mind !! If you can afford it then why not, I have to say I am the same people joke with me at the yard that Ebony has a different rug for each day of the week, I get her the best that I can afford again that is my choice. Life is far to short to get upset by these narrow minded people sod them, and just carry on as normal if you want something buy it you do not have to explain yourself to any one.

People have said that about me too!
I HAVE to have red and black stuff, I'm artistic and I love things to match. I don't have to worry about the general care of the horse though, since he's not mine! (He's very well looked after, I just get myself/him treats every now and again!)

I don't have "all the gear" though, just a few extra things here and there :P hehe! Next on my list is a bitless noseband.
I'm not the most knowledgeable horse-woman. But I know what I'm doing!

Most of us peeps on here are people who keep horses for a hobby. Mine certainly dont earn their keep but it's my pleasure to buy them nice things. If you can afford and want to spend money on your horse on whatever you like then that's entirely upto you.

People who make those sorts of comments, are as previous posters have said, usually green eyed, so try to ignore them and just enjoy your horse.

Just wondered - all the gear & no idea - is there even the tinest bit of truth in this 'no idea' thing? Could be they're not actually green eyed monsters at what you buy for your horse but are surprised you don't spend more on good trainers / instruction.

And even if that were true, what the hell has it got to do with them.

Buy what you want for your horse, its your money, enjoy.

I used to do it before I had three to keep, dont have the cash anymore.

Im the same, I spend so much on my horses!

I did a tack sale recently as my 17hh horse isn't going to fit my 15.2hher. I look after my stuff, buy good quality, search the web for deals etc, my stuff sold like a **** off a shovel! The other 12 stalls had so much tat, 30 year old broken bridles that havnt been oilded for 29years, old canvs rugs, dirty girths/bits etc.
Pretty much everyone said my stuff was new, no just looked after and decent stuff brought in the first place, made a lot of money thou!:D

I too have been called the gear girl, so what I bust a gut to work to look after the horse, I want to buy nice things. I don't go out/drink/smoke etc, a good day is a day hunting or in the show ring.

there is no problem at all having all the gear as long as you're not pretending to be someone you're not and not looking down at others who don't have the gear. it doesn't sound like you are doing either so thats fine.

Its the people that parade round with their top range kit claiming their some super duper amazing rider with the super duper competition record to match which when checked (easily done) you find out they have never even affiliated never mind won xyz they claimed to. It is those people that earn the title 'all the gear no idea' not you!

Fair enough but why do have to spend so much on STUFF?

Because I hate clothes shopping!

Tack shopping, I love that.

I'm not a labels girl thou, I can't spend £4000 on a saddle but £1000 for a made to measure black country suits me and my needs. I prefer every thing in leather, even if it a cheap shires leather headcollar for £18 (have seen fabric ones for £25) I'd rather buy the leather, but got labeled because of it. I suppose some people see that as having all the gear.
