Thought it would be interesting to hear what other people would think an acceptable weight for certain horses to carry.

I will post a picture and see what others think, would be good for people to add there own oo :)

Ok Flump I would guess at up to 14 stone for normal work nothing excessive and really for fast or heavy work maybe about the 12 stone and by fast I mean a long day hunting or eventing.
Lolly dolly I would say 10 -12 stone depending on the work, I like to underload rather than over so may be shot down.:)

About 25stone for the first, as long as its a balanced rider. The second 23stone. Including tack of course.

After the Christmas season I am now tipping the scales a little bit, still I am super balanced and therefore I am sure that pony will not be aware of my presence!
Also, as you can see this particular arena is very well padded so that is bound to take away any potential strain on his little tootsies :D

On a more serious note though thanks for your thoughts everyone, I'm glad to hear that I am well within his potential weight carrying limit so I don't have to worry about squishing him :D

Having pondered it, I don't think the 23 & 25 stone limits should include anything but rider weight in pjs. After all sec a's were bred to carry 16stone men up mountains all day, so a few stone more on a bigger one is fine. Provided you are 'carrying your own weight' you should be fine even if you had such a good xmas you are passing the 23stone mark. I'm actually 90 stone myself, but I am so experienced I am able to hover in mid air above the saddle.

hahahahaha...me too, but that's because I'm full of hot air!!

Third horse I'd say 3 stone if its a novice, 35 stone for a balanced rider. Or 90stone if its someone as wonderful as me. I'm pondering setting up my own bhs style stages, called 'gravity defying exams'. Stage 1 the rider loses a few pounds once mounted, right through to stage 4 where rider loses all physical weight once mounted.

Don't know why I bothered asking

Crellow - I should think owners want to have a second opinion of their maximum weight carrying ability to bear in mind for future reference. No competition that I am aware of - I would have been asked to join in if there was!

Great idea - will go with

12 stone for the first (rider weight) and 10 for the second, remembering that full tack and clothes adds at least a stone and probably more especially if you have a WOW saddle or similar.

I quite liked the humourous posts :o

Everyone has different ideas on what weight should be the maximum for each horse so all I'll say is if they were my horses the max I'd have on them would be, bay horse, 9 and a half stone. The cremello, 10 and a half stone. I always under weight horses but I'm sure others aren't as stringent as me.

I would say 13 stone for the 16.3hh ID x TB, 11 stone for the 15hh cremello (lovely conformation BTW), and around 12 stone for the 14.2 hh cob.

?!? Seriously? How heavy are you? 4.5st?!

I think you forgot how heavy the average even slim person is!

Do you really think Im too heavy for this horse (same size but less bone than LollyDolly's horse)? Or to ride the cremello? Because I weight more than 10st!

Or that this girl is too heavy for her horse? He's a similar build but 3" smaller than the firs bay, and she's significantly more than 12st!
