My horses sheeth is always grose, i clean have to clean it almost 3-4 times a month and every time its thick with muck going right down his leg, i dont no anyone else with a guelding that gets it this bad and am not sure if it should be getting this bad. He is not in the feild with mares, can anyone offer me any advice?

Um sounds like it could have an infection to me- I have had geldings for 18 years but have never had that.
I would ring a vet and just ask his opinion just to be safe.
What do you use to clean it? perhaps like nail said you should change product.

The only problem is that the muck is just so thick and i try to leave it as much as i can but it stinks and u can smell it when your right by his head and its realli thick and horrible. Also the last few times i have tried to leave it it ends upbecoming very swollen.

I use Hibbi scrub but the last time i used my friends sheath cleaner because i thought it might work a little better but it just grose again

You're not supposed to clean it more than about every 4 months because it disrupts the natural environment ie. natural oils etc. and that can lead to infection. However, I think you're doing the right thing to clean it when it gets as bad as you say as a build up of the smegma can cause cancer. I think he could have an infection as well, it shouldn't get that dirty and smelly so quickly so I'd get the vet out. I personally wouldn't use Hibiscrub on the area, best to use either sheath cleaner or plain boiled water.

Thanks i had no idea that i shouldnt use hibbi scrub, Yer ile definately call the vet for some advice, ile get some proper sheath cleaner in any advice on whats the best to buy?

omg did i really just say that!!

Get the vet- its not right

Agree with all of the above - I have 3 geldings, 2 never had any problems and don't touch- one sounds very similar to yours - had the vet out several times to sedate to clean thoroughly and check, and still is awful weeks later - the only thing I have found helps is vaseline after cleaning - just spend more time washing legs instead! I would get it checked in case there is an underlying problem though as our vet receommended regular checks as any problems there can be very aggressive if not dealt with quickly. Good luck

Leave well alone! I don't clean sheaths, never have done in all my years owning them and never had a problem. Keep checking as part of my routine that there are no major problems but other than that, nothing.

Classic!!!!

But I agree Vet out! I cleaned my boys the other day with Sheath Cleanser as I thought it might not be helping his mite problem, but his doesn't smell. Smell's usually mean infection. If in doubt follow your nose!!!
