I’m wanting to build a 20x40m sand arena to be used about twice a week. How much has everyone payed for theirs? Doesn’t have to be the fanciest of things, just useable to flat in.
The main thing to get right is the drainage, even a non fancy area will be useless if it doesn't drain well, the costs will depend in part on the groundworks required, the second big expense is the surface which will vary but it is not always worth going with the cheapest if it requires topping up frequently.
Saving on the fencing by not having any, if that is viable, will keep costs down without compromising on the quality, you may find a local contractor can do it for less than the companies that advertise as arena specialists but you need to check they know what to do and take a look a some already in place, look at spending at least £20k it could be a bit less but could be more if the ground requires a lot of work, access is bad or the transportation of materials is a long journey to the site, it can all add up.
I was quoted 28k for a 40x20 by an arena company. I project managed it myself and saved about 10k. Drainage was done properly, used good quality membrane, post and broad brown tape rather than rail fencing on 3 sides, good silica sand then carpet fibre power harrowed in. It's not the most perfect and beautiful arena ever, but it rides really well
