Hi knowledgeable people ,
I am hoping to build an all weather turnout for my older mare for the winter . She has cushings and has had drops in the past which now seem to be under control with medication . We have lots of land (we live on a stud farm ) but with winter coming it will like last year be too muddy for her .
She get stressed being brought in at night so it’s not an option to do so . I’m hoping to turn an area of her field into an all weather and then in the evenings she can go in there with her companion until morning . She has a field shelter but I’m wondering about what the best surface to put down is that won’t get boggy in bad weather .
Has anyone built one successfully ?

We have one which was built on an area of poor land which was quite wet. We put down a stone base and topped it off with large wood chippings. It's been down about 5 years now and is lasting quite well, but as it is wood it will need to be topped up at some point. I specifically didn't want sand as was concerned about sand colic. I have since wondered whether rubber would have been more permanent but not sure if rubber would sit well directly onto stone. It is well worth doing, a great asset.
