So i am trying to convince my mother that her next dog should be a greyhound.

She loves them but she is worried about exercise.

She currently has 2 older brittany's who get 2 hours in the morning and then 45 minutes to an hour at night and she doesn't want to give this up.

BUT she wants a dog that will be happy to sleep when in the house and be happy to be left and not need entertaining all day like the brittany's do.

It is mostly forest walks and she is in a wheelchair so its not 2 hours of running :)

Do you think a rescue greyhound brought up to fitness would be happy with that amount of exercise?

More than enough! Most would be happy with 2 or 3 half hour walks as long as it is offlead and they can stretch their legs. They would be fine with that amount of on-lead walks though. They are actually really lazy dogs ;)

LMAO - mine would go on strike if they had that much exercise :D I am hard put to make them go out for 10 minutes three times a day at the moment as it is cold....

Yes, it will most definitely be enough for any greyhound :):)

PS - dont forget to post some pictures :D

I knew it would be enough you plonkers :D

I was wondering if she would have to drag said dog by its tail to make it walk that far!

She doesn't want to give up those walks so wants a dog that can keep up.

Yes probably  Depends on the ground TBH - I did 5 miles of roadwork with mine at a reasonable speed (it took an hour and a quarter) and they hated it :( If it is softer ground then they are fine :)

Ahhh gotcha! Maybe get a lurcher?

I have 2 of the best longdog breed I have come across - Lab x saluki. They are just like long legged labs - labs on speed!

my previous greyhound (yes there will be more!) was bone idle for 90% of her day, sofa, cat bed, other dog bed and even the puppy crate were preferable to going outside!:D;)
but she did like a steady walk over an hour or so?
but then she was contrary as she happily went on walks with the hound puppies and the working labs!

Some greys are more active than others, so sure an adoption group could find a dog that likes exercise & doesn't have corns or some old injury that would restrict this. If mine were out for 2 hours they probably wouldn't be that interested in going out again for a decent walk later on... well Hector might Throp would just give the stink eye from his comfy sofa spot to tell you to go without him.

I have trouble keeping Barney going for 20mins and he sleeps pretty much 24/7
Hes already learnt when the lead comes out its walking time and he hides :D But i would say depends on the dog, hes just naturally a lazy g*t! ;)

Maybe a lurcher would be best then? Oscar is mainly greyhound (and looks like one) but with a dash of collie in there and he used to come out riding with me all the time. At one stage when I was working as a hunt groom he would hack out at trotting speed for up to 3 hours per day but he has always hated bad weather  He did have some seperation anxiety but crate training sorted that in a few weeks :D

I do know someone whose rescue greyhound lay down on a walk and refused to go any further so she kn*ckered her back carrying 30kg of lazy mutt back to the house lol

It may depend on the age too, my greyhound used to come out on walks following my horse, even on the beach - for a couple of hours, he loved it when I first got him, he would never let me out of his sight, he loved coming out and following me - bless him, but by the time he was 8/9/10ish we had to start to slow up and wait for him.

After that he liked pottering around the yard, but that was about it.

Ahhh, I feel sad thinking about those days, I miss him :o
