I saw an advert for good looking horse but it cribs :S This normally wouldn't really faze me only I may have to keep the horse at livery rather than at home. Would must livery yards mind a horse that cribs?? Or would they want me to pay extra in repairs for nibbled gates etc??

Thoughts and opinions must appreciated!!!

Yes, agreed actually, why would you even think of buying it? Plenty of stunners out there without vices...

I have put a metal strip on my stable door and have put electric fencing on top of the post and rail to stop him from damaging anything. He has a post he can crib on in the field. I did say to yard owner that if he damaged anything I would replace it.

Thanks for your replys :) In responce to the question asking me why I'm even considering it: in all other respects the horse looks perfecr, age, sex, height, breed, and most importantly experience.

Why shouldn't you buy a horse with a vice, so long as the price reflects it?

As far as the original question, there is not a single yard in our area that has a problem with a cribber. I have a cribber, no one else on the yard minds, and just for the record, other horses don't 'catch' it either!!

I say go for it, you might get a very nice horse for your money :)

I have a horse that windsucks. She is turned out 24/7 in the summer and during the day in winter with 4 other mares and is stabled with horses next to and opposite her and not one of them have even hinted at the thought of "learning" "catching" or whatever people call it.
She doesnt damage the fence luckily, but i do feel its only polite to offer some sort of money if a horse breaks a fence or door.

Mine cribs/chews occasionally, at my last yard they promised AYTO then didnt so he was a bit worse. I think the copying /learning thing is a bit of a fallacy but mine certainly was much worse when stabled near a cribber/windsucker but I think it was the constant noise that stressed him bringing out the tendancy already there. as he stopped as soon as the other one went. None of the yard I have been on have had a problem with it though although I would offer to pay for damage.

Yep agree with this wholeheartedly.

My boy cribs, but no-one has ever commented on it in a negative way before. It's just what he does and it affects nobody and no horse, and it's true that other horses don't catch the habit!

If you like the horse, he's the right price and you personally can deal with the cribbing (my boy wears a collar in his stable and it works wonders), go ahead with the purchase. There are plenty of worse things a horse can do than crib, believe me.

some people smoke, others chew gum, some nibble their finger nails..... none of which prevents them working. If the horse ticks all the boxes, the price is right, and it is able to "oblige" in the tasks set for the few hours you ask for, then what is the problem.

It has been shown that it is not copied and property can be protected.

Had an old boy that box-walked and cribbed ...sorry to say that 2 others started to pickup the cribbing. They quickly stopped once he was gone.

For anyone wondering what happened to the old timer. Unfortunately couldn't put him on grass livery due to circumstances at the time ....although he was neither happy in the stable or in the field.

Happy to say he is now retired

There's nothing wrong with a cribber!
No yard has ever had a problem with mine, just be upfront! Never been 'passed on' to another horse.

If he's right in every other way for you, go for it :p

The first yard I ever rode at had a stable out back for cribbing horses... lol! (It hadn't been used in a long time...)

TBH, have you considered treating the vice? Coligone, I hear, is excellent at settling tummies, as reflux is often to blame for stable vices.

And I don't believe in vices being caught. IMO it's due to bad stable management causing a habit to cope with pain, and that doesn't spread. (however, bad stable management might!)
