Looking for a feed for my mare for the winter.
She is generally a good doer, but I don't know how she will winter this year as she will be on Hay not Hayledge so something that will keep her weight steady without fizzing her up would be great, and I was reccomended C + C by a friend.
I do normally feed straights but shes beein very anxious over the past few weeks so I don't want to add to that by feeding her oats!
Does C+C really add topline without the fizz? Or are there better feeds out there?
 
Theres normally alot of mixed reviews about C&C. I started my ex racer on it last year along with alfa oil (he's an extremely poor doer!) and it certainly had no adverse affect on him and considering he's full TB I thought it might blow his head off. He's extremely relaxed and very easy to ride since he's been on it, so I have nothing bad to say about it.

his topline still needs working on but thats all exercise now :)

It works really well in the winter for my tb. He's very sharp anyway but it doesn't add to his neuroticness! Very good at keeping weight on him.
 
I've never had any problems feeding it on my tbs. It helped put weight on a "rescue" case and didn't cause any fizziness. I would certainly recommend giving it a try. It must be soaked though as instructed on the bag.
 
i really rate it but cant actually use it with my mare as it contains alfalfa which she has obscene reastions to! (energy - but not at all controllable energy!)
 
I used to have my TB on it & he looked great. Certainly didn't blow his mind (any more than it already was ;)). Only took him off it to swap for a lower starch feed as I took his back shoes off.
 
Well my mare was on Alfalfa last winter (Alfa A) and she was fine on it so hopefully on the C+C she will be fine! I got a little tester from Burghley so I will try her on that and see if she goes loopy :D
 
Yes I think it’s very good feed to use for a winter diet with horses that need that bit extra without feeling too good, but I guess it depends on the horse and what else you choose to feed with it.

It will just be fed with HiFi, Magnitude (although might stop that for the winter) and garlic twice a day, and Ad lib Hay. I am not sure if we will get much turnout this winter so she may get 3x small feeds per day.
 
I loved AP C&C it got my Belgium Warmblood from a scraggly bag of bones to a lovely healthy condition and he especially loved it served warm in that cold snap we had last year :p

Once he was up to weight though he became less than 'calm' so I called AP and they thought that it maybe the high starch content and suggested a change of feed.

I really rate it and would use again- it's great value too!
 
I feed my ex-racer TB it :)
He's only been on it a couple of weeks, just C&C and Alfa A (swapped from his previous diet of Sugarbeet, Barley Rings, Conditioning Mix & Alfa-A)
He gets a lot of it as I'm feeding it to gain weight (2x very large feeds a day) but he hasn't become fizzy or stupid at all.. And he looks to be gaining weight (I hope!!) And he absolutley LOVES it!!

Even better.. I emailed Allen & Page to discuss if it would be a good option for him and they sent me a sample of the feed and a £3 off voucher for their feeds :D:D:D

When I bought my boy, I had to put weight on him and no fizz, so I used C&C as recommended by the competition yard where he went for schooling, he was fine, but was puting a bit too much on, and I went over to C and C, plus Fast Fibre. I could adjust his condition easy-peasy and was sure he was getting his full need for vits and mins.
 
I've had my 19 year old Cob on it for around 4 months, and with two feeds a day he gained alot of weight and looked great, and there was no change in his behaviour whilst on it either. I've recently transferred him onto Baileys number 4 to see if it's any better, but I was very happy with C & C!! xx
 
when I got my lad he was very thin and an extremely poor doer. We tried Bailey's no.4 and Outshine but both drove him loopy, same with Blue chip. We worked out he is not good with too many cereals, although C&C does have starch, of course. Tried C&C and he is amazing, looking better than he ever has and is not at all loopy. He is on C&C, FiberGY, beet and carrots/ apples as well as his Coligone, for his stomach. Works for us.

I thought c and c was a feed for horses who struggle to maintain weight but you want to add weight without increase fizziness?

Rather than it having a calming influence?

For a good doer I think you would be better feeding something like bailys lo cal. Balnacer?

That is what I thought it was for as well. I certainly would not give it to my good doer.

I've always used it with my tb with a scoop of cool mix and chaf. I've had her 10 weeks and there's a massive change in her coat condition already. Even better - I've not even used one bag yet!
 
I feed my TB AP C&C and AP Ride and Relax with a handful of Hi Fi, Garlic and 2x 5 ml scoops of Magnesium Sulphate - this once a day at the moment.

I dont think that C&C is meant to calm its just a low energy feed so is not a 'heating' feed, as is the same as R&R... low cereal
 
My mare didn't like it! I thought at first it was the texture but she will gulp down sloppy feed? She's not normally fussy being Connie x id but she was reluctant to eat it. Can't say it helped much either. In the end Baileys conditioning mix did the trick.
